There seems to be a good population of 500E/E500 owners on this forum who responded to a recent rollcall. How many AMG owners do we have [I guess that we could count RENNTECH cars as brethren as well]?
If you own one of the AMG cars, please reply with the model, year & color and mileage of yours, as well as any info re tires and modifications you'd care to share. Also, please include your state/country. For myself: '98 C43AMG, black with silver/black interior; Michelin Pilot Sports; Charlotte, NC [Edited by c43amg on 05-31-2001 at 09:28 AM] |

Hehe, well if I could legitimately import the thing without numerous issues, I'd be driving an AMG E55 4-Matic Wagon right now, but I settled for the E320 (brilliant silver) Wagon because of my whimsical albeit conservative nature. heh. I am in the process of modifying the E320 to many of the AMG specs--minus the engine charge.
I have an '02 AMG Designo (Cognac) ML55 in the system, and should be seeing it around September, or so. I don't know if that makes me "brethren", but I am sure it makes me sardonic enough to play one on TV. |

Old vs New AMG
As an interested observer, but not an AMG owner, I wonder if you would differentiate between the previous independent AMG tuner models and the current AMG in-house models?
Which will be more valuable in the future? |
Dean,
As far modifications go on any vehicle, I have found a pretty simple trend. Any modification that a person puts into a car that is non-stock makes them think the car is worth more, while, in reality, it doesn't seem to benefit anything in terms of resale. I consider in-house AMG "stock". I would be wary of buying an aftermarket modification car (even pre-Mercedes AMG, Brabus, and RENNTech) used. Unless I knew the original owner, and what the intent of the modifications were, I'd probably steer clear. So, my vote is that the Mercedes-AMG in-house modifications, in the long run, will hold a higher value. [Edited by porsche on 06-01-2001 at 11:21 AM] |
I'd say in-house...
I'd have to agree with Porsche. Tuner cars, specially those with a lot of proprietary parts tend to be prohibitively expensive to maintain since your source for these parts would only be the tuner. As these tuner cars are limited production numbers, they can't achieve economies of scale for spares. This tends to put a cap on the desirabililty of these cars long after it ceases to be current.
In the case of Benzes specifically, tuner cars don't have the advantage of an MB classic centre to help out with parts as these cars age... |

Silver / Black&Silver Stock 33,000 miles Long Island, NY Only major complaint is driver seat failure. The backrest bladders have broken 4 times and have shifted around. I wouldn't get air bladder seats again. Tires: OEM Conti's, RE71's, RE730's, Kumho V700's the Re730's are best street tire i've used so far. The Kumho's are OK but as i was told on this board - get hoosiers. The oversized rear kumho just hasn't worked well yet. |
