Dave- I would think that with 1-bump spring-pads, the 500E struts would work fine.

Glen has 500E struts on his wife's wagon with stock springs & pads, and I believe Glen said it works great and he also has 500E for comparison.

BTW: I do have 500E front & rear springs on my wagon, as well as 500E front struts.

gsxr 10-23-2003 01:29 PM

Yep - if it's low enough, the 500E struts should work fine. But I'd still go with KONI's in your situation. :D :D

yeah i have 1 bumps fr/rr. I may give it ago. if th eprice is right

thanks guys.

surprising...

No one has mentioned anything about the AMG E60 suspension setup.

Currently, I am running AMG E60 springs (front and rear), with Bilstein Sport shocks up front and OEM (hydromatic) rears.

I am considering upgrading my rear (OEM, hydromatic) shocks to the AMG E60 (hydromatic) offerings; is anyone here running them?

If so, ...impressions?

ke6dcj 10-23-2003 02:55 PM

Scott- what's it like with E60 springs? Did it lower the car much? Is it very stiff, or still compliant?

BGW: what's up with www.500ecstasy.com ?

Am I typing it wrong, or is it down?

All my websites will be back up NLT 2200 hrs, tonight; #$%^ing SBC screwed up my circuit speed upgrade order and CANCELLED my Internet service, early last week!!!

My ride is much stiffer than OEM, obviously; however, it is PERFECT in the front. I am seeking opinions on the rear (AMG E60) hydromatic struts before I "bite the bullet" and spring for them, given the "$teepne$$ factor."

; )

gsxr 10-23-2003 03:47 PM

Scott, just to inform the rest of our readers about your full setup... you DO have the sweet RENNTech front sway bar, right? IIRC, it is 30mm in the middle, and 22mm at the ends? Stock 18mm rear bar, correct? On a side note - who do you buy your Euro parts from?

:)

run.exe 10-23-2003 04:13 PM

Dave

You are correct; my front swaybar is a 30mm (O.C.) RENNtech.

I buy my parts directly from the tuners, usually.

gsxr 10-23-2003 05:51 PM

Holy CRAP! You weren't kidding about the price:

HWA1243200313
HYDRO-PNEUM.AUX SPRING
EUR 773.23
The part is available.

DAMN!!! Even from Speed-Autotiele.com, that's still gonna be about $1500 USD for the pair. And I thought the rear springs were pricey at $500/pair...! FYI, here's the E60 AMG suspension part numbers:

(All prices Euro List from the MB web page: )

HWA-124-321-04-04 - Front spring - $300/ea
HWA-124-320-15-30 - Front strut - $550/ea

HWA-124-324-04-04 - Rear spring - $275/ea
HWA-124-320-03-13 - Rear hydro "shock" - $775/ea

Sheesh, that's about $3500 USD, plus another $200 for the E60 sway bar, to bring your 500E up to AMG specs. Almost makes RENNTech look affordable. :D

Wow. Now THAT is interesting. Apparantly buying AMG parts direct from AMG is lots cheaper than buying them from Mercedes - whoda thunk it. ;) The prices I posted were from MB Germany, and nearly double the cost on everything. Thanks for the tip - I'll keep that in mind! Perhaps the AMG prices quoted are what AMG sells them to MB for, then MB marks them up? Hmmm.

Now, as to the left/right spring thing. First, I think a little dyslexia is involved. All the 124-321 numbers are FRONT springs, all the 124-324 numbers are REAR springs. I think the next two digits (either 02 or 04) would be relevant for left & right. However, I have to question the accuracy of that. The Euro EPC shows the same springs left & right for the E60, both 04-04's. I tried to find where the 02-04's were used, and the only place I located them were under the AMG kit for 124.031, .128, and .133 "with self leveling". (Note: The EPC shows the 02-04's used in matching pairs on those chassis, same springs for left & right.) Now either Herr Watzl made a mistake (possible, not that likely, I'd hope), OR the EPC is wrong and AMG really did spec different springs left & right. I'm a little surprised at this new information and don't really know which is correct. Anyone know for sure? Or, he just quoted prices on the 6 numbers provided, and didn't verify the application. Where did you get the info, Scott...?

run.exe 10-23-2003 06:33 PM

Herr Infomeister

I obatined all of the aforesaid data from Mr. Wetzl, himself.

FYI - Herr Wetzl is Guntehr Riese's replacement...

gsxr 10-23-2003 06:37 PM

Dang. I'd mention to him that the Mercedes factory parts catalog (EPC) conflicts with his info, and could he please verify it. I've never heard of different springs left & right on a Benz (at least no 201/124 chassis). And I'm 99.44% sure that I'm correct on the front/rear thing with the 321/324 numbers... somebody goofed on that, IMO. Either way, at ~$1800 EUR for the full kit (maybe $2k total with the sway bar to complete it), that's not really THAT bad. I've saved all the info for when I eventually get a 500E. (I'm hoping Shanta will sell me hers when she gets bored with it and upgrades to an E55 or something. ;) )

Dave- how about a MB pn# for the E60 long block AND short-block?

:-) neil
