W124 Wagon Suspension Help

Hi Folks-

Does anyone have any experience with aftermarket suspension parts on a W124 wagon? Specifically H&R springs and Bilsteins shocks????

Want to lower the car and firm up the ride.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Scott

I installed Eibach springs all around with the thickest MB spring pads and Bilstein Sport shocks on the front of my 1991 300TE (standard SLS on the rear). The Eibachs lowered the front to where I have approx. 1" of clearance between the top of the tire and the bottom of the wheel opening and lowered the rear to approx. 1/2" of clearance between the top of the tire and the bottom of the wheel opening. The maximum camber that I can obtain for the front with all new bushings, etc. is -1.10 deg. and the rear was -2.0 deg. until I installed an adjustable upper camber arm. Even with these camber settings tire wear has not been any worse than normal with soft W speed rated tires. The Bilstein sport shocks are fairly stiff but not annoyingly so imo. Mark

Thanks for the reply!

Where did you get the rear camber correction kit?

I spoke with a fellow this morning that really spooked me about using aftermarket shocks/springs on this car. He said the car would ride absolutely horrible.

I'm used to the ride of Bilstein Sports and H&R springs on other cars I have, in fact I would have it no other way. Just wondering why I was told it was such a bad combination on the W124 wagon.......

Do a search and you will find EVERYTHING you need to know.

Just like you, I own a 500E and a wagon. Being that you are used to the rail riding of the 500E, you won't be disappointed with any of the suggestions that have been made: H&R, Bilstein's, Sportline, etc, etc, etc.

I bought the arms from a gentleman whose screen name was MBRacer. He no longer manufactures them and took down his internet site. You can always go the MAC bushing route which I believe replaces the lower inside suspension arm bushing. This is a better approach to replacing the upper camber arm when it comes to fenderwell clearance issues with oversized tires (mine are 205/55 X 16 and just clear with the camber set to -.30 deg.)
The ride really isn't harsh. I did replace the accumulator cells and the level control valve to regain sufficient rear damping capabilities, however. I don't think you will be disappointed with the ride or handling. One note: I recently acquired a 95 E320 wagon for my father and replaced all the suspension parts with new OEM bits before I delivered it to him. I can honestly say that I don't know how I ever drove my 91 wagon before I lowered it and stiffened it up a bit. Although I love the M104 engine compared to my M103, the 95 rode too high off the road, was underdamped and leaned too much in corners for my tastes. I honestly wouldn't be able to take it for long. Also user ke6dcj on this board has a resprung 300TE and is quite familiar with the hot antisway bars for this car. Mark

It sure would be nice to have them but I would hate to buy them and have them be worn and leaky Question: Since the 210 body wagon has a much firmer stock ride than the 124 body wagon does anybody know if the 210 rear struts will fit a 124 and will that yield a firmer ride? The reason I ask is (from my shop forum gallery page) my 210 wagon has W211 alloy wheels (9x18 rear with Kuhmo SPX 265/35 and 8x18 front with 235/40), Bilstein Sport front shocks, stock rear SLS, H&R front and rear bars and bushings and has been lowered with H&R springs, 4 bump front and 3 bump rear spring pads, H&R springs and stock bushings. The ride is firm but still compliant and the rear damping is definitely firmer than the 124 even with the 18" staggered wheels. I know the accumulator is different which, together with the different struts, may account for the firmer ride. Mark
