Yet another question...

My 500E is a 93 model year 500E as dictated by the VIN (WDBEA35E6PBXXXXXX) but it was sold to the original owner on 6 Nov 92. I understand the P in the VIN makes it a 93 model year.

Does this make my motor a 92 (reputedly more powerful) or a 93 and later? Engine no. is 005674.

Just wondering...

Mine is letter "N" in that location, BTW.

I'm thinking you have a '93 motor, which is an open deck design. I'll confirm tonight when I get home.

Michael,

What are some of the differences between the '92 motor and the '93 & '94 motors? Is it programming or mechanical or both? I was curious as to why the 6 liter conversions were 10K more if the car is not a '92. Core charge thing - block different?

As I understand it, the '93 and later M119s were of "open deck" design, meaning that if you pulled a head off you could see the water jacket all around each cylinder. On the '92s, there was more material there and you could not see the water jacket. Likely this modification was for better cooling, but I've not heard that the later motors run any cooler. Bottom line, you can't bore the later blocks much.

As to the extra oomph the '92s are reported to have, I think that's related to a more aggressive fuel map profile.

Michael,

Thanks for the info. I've got a buddy who's bored and stroked his 928 and they welded in a deck plate to increase the strength of the bores (maybe this is the same issue with the mercedes block post '92). They also put in cast iron liners which most guys don't do. There are a many stroked/bored 928's out there that were simply bored out and don't have deck plates or liners.

If you stroke the Porsche 5 liter engine you get 6 liters and then you can bore it another 4mms or so and get another .4 liters. I had assumed the 6 liter mercedes upgrades were all stroke increase.

Anyways, check out his website http://www.928sg.com He also added the 968 variocam. Should be a moster. They're dyno tuning the Motec unit this week.

Thanks again,

Randy

M=1991 model year, and N=1992. Likely O is skipped, so you have a '93 motor.

Looks like you'll simply have to fit twin turbos or a Kompressor!
