Right, but I want to know how it feels..first gear start in these cars is awkward and sometimes jarring.

Ah. The cat he recommended for the first gear kit, includes the Superior kit to tone down the 1-2 shift, I too find it a bit too much. And if you turn down mod pressure it softens the 2-3/3-4 too much. :( So I deal with it being harsh.

My SD and SDL are 2.88:1 + first gear, so I have an idea but since they make more torque off idle it's more difficult to compare. Despite total HP/TQ are lower.

fahrgewehr2 01-27-2008 09:00 PM

The kit says there are two options for 1gs...which did you use?

Motor Head 01-27-2008 11:06 PM

Fahrgewehr2,

I posted this earlier in the thread regarding how the car drives with the 2.88 gear compared to the stock 3.46 gear.

Actually, my wife (it's really her car you know) thinks it accelerates better with the 2.88 gear and I agree but let me qualify my statement. It accelerates better at part throttle and the reason I believe this is true is because we are in the converter a lot more with the lower gear and reaping the benefits of torque multiplication. However, when we reach freeway speeds we are safely above the converter stall speed so I don't worry about overheating the transmission.

Acceleration from say 70 mph seems about the same and 3rd gear is definitely more useful during a downshift.

Full throttle acceleration is slightly penalized but since we don't drag race the 300 SEL it's not to much of an imposition :)

I got what I was looking for in this swap with the improved fuel economy and the engine is much more relaxed at freeway speeds.

Fahrgewehr 2,

I forgot to mention that I used the softest shift option in the kit. It is still a little stiff but much better than before.

For the 1-2 upshift?

Motor Head 01-28-2008 09:10 PM

Correct, for the 1-2 shift.

Both used twin Garrett T2 turbos with cast iron turbo/exhaust manifolds.
The turbos are set at a fixed .48 bar

Mosselman kits made their way to the USA in the early nineties.
I believe I have the first TurboTechnics install in the USA.
There are a few more in progress at the current time on M104-24V engines.

The kits were old inventory at Hughes of Beaconsfield, a U.K. Merc dealer.
The kits including a full stainless steel large bore exhaust were being closed out at about $2600.00 delivered to the USA.
A whole lot for the money !!!
Hughes had the kits commissioned for them to install on new Mercedes pre delivery.
Probably 50+ cars were done by them in the early nineties and several I know of with over 150K miles, and yet to have the engine open !!

If you start with a strong M103/M104 ( compression 190-195PSI ) and no head gasket leaks, you will end up with a very durable engine that is far from "whinny screaming" as some believe.
An engine doesn't scream when it's making it's power from 4200-5500 RPM.

I also own a 99 C43 AMG and a 03 G55 AMG along with a 71 280SL.
The M103-12V TT will out run any 4.3L/5.4L NA AMG V8.

RBYCC,

I noticed when you posted this that you have a very nice looking grill on your car. Did you make it or have it made?

Thanks,
Motor Head

Actually got it off of EBAY....
Amazing quality S600 / Avantgarde style.
OEM fit and finish and if I recall about $90.00 delivered.
Had purchased another one a few years ago but quality not so good !

Now if you just scroll up to Roman's posting above, you should do the Megasquirt mod and I'll bet it runs even better!

RBYCC,

Thanks for the tip. I found several for the W126 class. Do you remember which company you bought from?

Thanks,
Motor Head

RBYCC,

I tracked down the source of some spare parts for the turbo techniques system you have at Mercedes Benz of Beaconsfield. I have been corresponding with the parts manager and he says he thinks he can help me with my request but asked for some pictures to help identify the needed parts.

I sent him some of the shots you provided in this thread but it would be great if you have additional pictures. I would be interested in all pictures you have but specifically if you have ones that show the coolant and oil return lines from the turbos as well as the plumbing from the fuel system to the fuel injector casting. Also the configuration of the oil supply lines near the oil filter would be very helpful.

If you have some additional photos, feel free to email me directly at schultzelkj@roadrunner.com. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kurt

I assume by "coolant" you mean the oil feed lines to the turbos or the water supply?
If so, this was one of the TT supplied parts ( part # K429 ) that had to be modified as it didn't fit.
The oil feed comes off the oil filter housing.
You remove the oil pressure sender ( M12 x 1.5F ) and thread in an adapter that accepts the oil pressure sender and the line that splits to two that feeds the oil to the turbos.

Th oil drain /return lines ( TT part #K427 ) runs from the Turbo returns to the oil pan.
The oil pan is drilled 15.25MM / 19/32" and tapped 3/8" BSP.
The fittings go through the holes and are secured inside with a washer and brass nut.

The water cooling to the turbos can be seen in the below pix.
( Runs from upper radiator hose neck , teeing off to turbos, then to the fill reservoir )
Difficult to get a picture of the oil filter/ turbo oil supply area, but I'll try !

Ed,

Thanks very much for the pictures. They are very helpful to show the details of the plumbing. I didn't realize you had part numbers for the different kits. It might be easier to communicate with the parts guy if I had a good list of part numbers. Do you have a list from the kit you bought. You already gave me the oil system numbers. The part numbers for the cooling system feed and return lines, the piggyback fuel system part numbers, the number of the casting that replaces the rubber boot under the air valve and the intake piping and air cleaner part numbers would really help me out.

I can't thank you enough for all the help you have already given me. I'm ordering the split second unit this week. I have also contacted Jonathan at Blue Ridge MB and he is hooking me up with the kevlar frictions, MB master kit, and torque converter with torrington bearing upgrade. I'm getting there one piece at a time!

Thanks,
Kurt
