Exclamation Putting a 560SEC motor and trans in a 420sel

BEFORE you guys try and tear my head off, THE 1986 560SEC WAS TOTALLED! No chance at recovery, gone. So, the motor and transmission are in good condition, this being said I am considering putting it in my 1989 420sel. My 420 needs a valve job and the transmission needs rebuilding so it seems like a viable option. My question is this, should this be a simple swap? Is their any major modification needed? I’ve heard it’s a direct mount as far as putting a 560sel in a 420sel but what of a 560sec? As far as I can tell the only big thing is tossing in a new brain. I have 2 days to decide whether or not to buy the motor so the sooner the better. Thanks for your time and I hope for good news.

Hi Grim,
Welcome to MercedesShop! Now prepare to have you head completely torn off..
Sounds like a very straight froward swap to me as they are both M117's. The current wiring harness should work also as long as it's in good condition. So, Yeah, just swap the engine, tranny, ECU and maybe Fuel and AC relays if RPM cutoff is different. Your air cleaner on the 560 has two air intakes so make sure you grab all those parts as well. While your in there buy new tranny and engine mounts and replace the torque converter seal. Oh, and the rear crank seal.

It shouldn't. I figured you meant SEC. Don't think they ever made a 560SE.

They did in Europe.... Euro 560 motors produce more power than the US spec 560 motors.

Lightbulb So i guess i get to keep my car!

Very good to hear, i was pretty sure it was straight forward. By the looks of it, I'm paying 1000 to 1200 for the motor and transmission !!!! <--- and the guy i'm buying it from knows a shop that will do the install for 600!!! so i figure after i swap out a few parts on the motor, the basics like some new gaskets and such, I'll have a complete swap for under 2,300.

p.s. if they do the swap for said price and do a good job... i'll toss their number up

gotta love it when a good deal comes along. I'll take some before and after pics if everything works out.

(any other tips would be greatly appreciated)

later

and thanks again

FYI, if I recall there were some very minor differences in the wiring diagrams between the w126 and c126 560's.....probably mostly related to comfort options, vs engine related stuff. The wiring for the m117 is very straightforward, and you shouldn't have any problems

To be on the safe side I would go engine transmission computer and wire harness. It should bolt right in. As far as the engin coming from an SEC rather than an SE only means the guy who wrecked the car cried more.

My understanding is that the 420 is a 116 engine the 560 is a 117. Transmission internals might be beefier and calibrated differently between the two. You should also check the rear ends used in each care I'm not sure if they are the same size and ratio. The 560 was a possi so you may want to stael that too while your at it.

after reading, thats what I was going to say. I'm going to be doing the same too, but from the earlier 116 > 117 engines, a 380 to a 500. Keep us posted on how it goes and any problems they encounter, I'd be interested in that.

The only real difference between the M116 and the M117 is the crank stroke. I'd try the newer wiring harness that's already installed before swapping to the older one the SEC. I believe it's a big job compared to the newer wiring harnesses with core connectors. Like 5+ hours!

It sounds like a good idea to me, in practical and financial terms both.

I would definately do it. Nothing like 560 power in these cars.

Is the engine bay the same on all of those cars? I guess there might be differences in the from suspension from the 380 to the 560. That would be more weight, wouldn't it?

Thumbs up update

SO, i've managed to talk the guy into letting me come on down and dig through the old sec while i'm there . He says he will throw in the ECU and any relays for free! gotta love it. And he's going to do a compression test as well (just to be safe) i guess the motor and trans have about 150,000 mi, But if they were well taken care of as they appear to have been they've got at least another 150,000 in them. I'll be heading over there this Sunday to take a look (and hopefully grab some other tid bits i've been searching for) I'll let you know how it goes... And if i back out, i'll let you know where it is . haha.

A quick question guys, I've heard that the horsepower on this thing can range from 230 to 300 stock. What kind of hp am i looking at with the 1986 560sec?
And while i'm at it, I heard their are quite a few performance mods as well... Where would i look for such products? Performance plus doesn't seem to offer much but stock equipment.

As far as the install, the guy i was talking to about it didnt speak very good English but 've got a friend who can talk to him and hopefully work it out. Then again i could always try to talk the guy selling into installing

Thanks again guys, keep tossing me info and i'll keep updating you.
