Converting a non LS rear to LS
Converting a non LS rear to LS. Can this be done on a 1996 SL600 wich originally came with ESP. This is a bigger housing than the 126 housing?

It depends on what carrier you have. Look up on the epc to see what carrier the sl600 had in it. The numbers on the unit do not help much. It is pretty likely that you can do one of two things. Either put the lsd from the s350 units or a carrier from the an asd diff, or it might be the large carrier which you could get the quaife unit for. The other option is to install one of these phantom grips like turboe320.
I am personally torn between spending the money on a quaife unit or buying a limited slip unit from a 4matic or something of that nature. I saw your video and that was one hell of a peg leg. Also the ESP system will help with this. Great to see everything finally working. Going to have to tub the rear end for some slicks or something. |

Housing Carrier Spider Gears Side Gears 86 560SL 126 351 12 01 126 350 20 23 140 353 05 14 140 353 08 15 96 SL600 140 351 04 05 140 350 12 23 140 353 05 14 140 353 07 15 It looks like if the 126 carrier can be used this should be a go. But the 140 case is about 1.25 inches wider. The side bearings may be wider apart. I checked Quaife and phantom but nothing was listed for the 129. I'm thinking I could make a phantom unit myself. The phantom unit also looks like it will wear out side gears quickly. What is ASD or do you mean ASR which I also thought had an open diff.

My phantomgrip lsd is working just fine and the material on the phantom is softer than the gears in the diff so the phantom wears out, not the diff. I can spin both tires all day since I have the heavy springs in mine. It doesn't drag around corners or any of that junk either. It will surprise you if your used to all that wheelspin I saw in your burnout vid. You took off quick on a one wheel peel, your gonna fly on a proper launch with both wheels hookin.

It was 499 plus shipping costs. I sent them my diff, they made the block, installed it and sent it back .

With the introduction of the 140 case the internals all became 140 P/N's with the exception of the spider gears. The 140 case is physically 1.25" wider and about an inch longer than the 126/107 case. Therefore it appears that the 140 carrier is most likely to have a wider space between bearings. I believe this lager case was introduced for the V-12.

It took just over 2 weeks for the whole ordeal. Would your rear diff be similar to mine? Did you use the SL600 diff or the 560SL diff?
Also why was your thread taken down?

Another option I have is using certain 560 euro spec rear which came with 2.65 gears. The problem with that is I believe I am pushing the torque limits of the 126 rear so I would prefer to have a 140 solution as it was designed for this kind of torque. By the way I'm going to Munich next week. Anyone know of any good German bone yards. One where I might be able to find a good Euro 126 rear with LSD and 2.65 gears. So I don't know when I'm going to get to do this. But the plan will be to try the 560SL carrier. If it fits great. If not I will send the rear to Phantom Grip.
