Right on Alan sounds good. Hey Alan what kinda suspension you running on your 500E Im just curious
Actually I'm going to take a sensus on who running what I think it will be good for some research. See ya Guido |

Guido, At this time the suspension is box stock except forthe wheels and tires. I am still researching what combination to go with. Yours by the way looked great. I will update with a posting and photo when I get things sorted.
Alan

Back to the cooling fan harness...
Back to the cooling fan harness, I've lived with mine for a week now. I also use Water Wetter.
LA commuting - I feel like the fans now kick in a little too early. With the harness installed, my car's fan now seems to start at 90 degrees on the gauge, and stop about 82 degrees or so. Is this possibly TOO cool? The outside temp. was quite mild all week - 60's and 70's. The fan seemed a bit too eager to start up. Can you use a different resistor that will cause the fan to start up around 95? Trip to Monterey last weekend - I was REALLY glad your mod. was installed in my car! We drove up 101 to 1, and back down 101. On the trip back through the Salinas valley, outside temps went to 105, and we were cruising with a friend in a Porsche at 80. Engine temp maxed at 95. That compares to torturing my car, crawling in LA commuter traffic without your mod., with the outside temp at 101 and the engine temp hitting 105. I'm certainly keeping your mod. harness installed in my car. But how about that slight change in the resistor?

The saga continues
Mark some reason your car runs a little cooler then alot of 500s ived worked on or talk to the guys on the forum that had them.
Its worth it. If your doing the bumper to bumper everyday I dont think im going to make another one with different resistance values. There pretty much set. Alot of the guys ived sold them to had alot hotter running engines then yours.. Talk to you soon Mark. Guido |

I should be careful what I wish for
Maybe mine runs cooler 'cause I spend so much time cleaning the dirt out from under the hood! Or maybe it's the exquisite care you guys give my car there at MB South Bay!
I came across this website in the pages here after I posted my last reply in this string: http://pages.prodigy.net/jforgione/MB_S500.html jforgione outlines the connection between engine temp. and ignition timing (hence, performance) pretty thoroughly in frames 15 and 16. Kinda makes me glad mine runs a bit cool! Maybe I shouldn't ask for that resistor change!!! Thanks, Guido.

Another thing. It just dawned on me. But you had 4-5 degrees of timing chain stretch which in turns retards the timing which could make the engines run hotter. Since you did the chain louie even mention that to me. He said once I do the chain mod it should kick the temp down a little. I know i have some chain strech I bet. Were going to do that in a few weeks on my car.

According to the info that jforgione presents on his site, the ignition timing is retarded in response to higher engine temperatures. You are theorizing that the engine temp. increases because of the timing chain stretch, which would cause a retard in the valve timing, right? Would that have the same effect as an ignition advance? Sorta makes sense, but I'm not sure if my logic is correct. If so, then if retarding the ignition timing results in a cooler-running engine, your idea of replacing the timing chain should do likewise. It begs the question: does a stretched timing chain yield greater horsepower???
BTW, my car wasn't running hot before I had the timing chain replaced. Jforgione mentions a retard as much as 30 degrees in extreme circumstances! So I wouldn't expect a big temp change from replacing the chain, if I were you. I know you'll still do it, though! You love your beast like I love mine!

guido- can you share how many or your piggy tails you've sold to 500e/e500 owners, and any more personal feedback you can share?
I'd like to order, and am wondering if it would void or adversely affect Starmark warranty in the event a coverage issue arises? tks-fad '94 E500, 35K |

Plug in, plug out. Two minutes, including the time it takes to open and close the hood (if you don't dawdle admiring the cool-looking engine and polishing the power steering reservoir like me). Who's gonna know? And besides, I feel it is only a "force for good." I'm sure you share my nagging question, though: why didn't MB set the fans to run at a lower temperature in the first place? Doesn't it get hot in Sindelfingen?

. . .borrowed my idea!
Mark,
glad you like the resistor 'addition'! Italian benz "borrowed" the idea from me and has made up the harnesses using the 1.1K ohm resistor. And he never sent me one, even after asking! Just disrespect!! You can replace the resistor as I point out to move the cut-in point of the aux fans but since the slope of the varistor is changing so quickly, it's hard to control the temperature cut-in point with much accuracy. Also each varistor is a little different so by all means experiment. To rise the cut-in temp, make the resistor larger, say 1.2K ohms. Make sure that the resistor is a film type with 1% tolerance. I too finished a trip to Napa Valley and temps when we passed over the Grapevine were up to 102F. At 100 - 120mph, the car gets a little hot , and the early cut-in is appreciated there as much as it is in stop and go traffic. |

Guido, can you post the picture on the "Angeleno 500E owners: Sunday Drive? " thread in the hot rods forum? Maybe we can entice a few more E-drivers out for another lap soon!
