Bench racers

Ran into some guy today who drives one of those Miata "Special Editions", which consists primarily of heavy option packages that ultimately compromise the performance of these already underpowered cars.

In any case, after his continuing description of the blistering performance of his car, I asked him if he's ever actually run the thing on a track. To which he responds that he'd run it just a few months prior with a Miata club at Lime Rock, and he'd managed to attain 143 MPH on the straight. 143!! For those unfamiliar with the track, 143 MPH requires something quicker than a mere, say, supercharged E55. On nitrous. And a friend of his had gotten to 154 MPH with a blown Miata!

The conversation pretty much fizzled at that point...get a grip, amigo

How rude! You didn't let him finish...

...he was probably still about to say "...Then I woke up..."

I would have continued to have fun w/ the conversation by telling him "Wow, I know a guy with the same car who pulled 0.83g on the skidpad at 35 ft." He would be like "Oh yea, easily!"
