Running dual exhausts on an SEC

I was considering the possibility of running dual exhausts on my 1987 560SEC. Has anybody tried this? What I'd like to do is to run the pipes back from the cats on either side of the car and connect them to single inlet/double outlet, low-restriction mufflers. I'd just weld some nice-looking dual, chrome tips onto the end of the system.

If there's not room for two mufflers near the end, what about putting some kind in the space where the resonators were. I've already cut those out, so there's some room there. It's not so much as a performance enhancement as for the look ad sound I might be able to get from doing this.

Anybody tried something like this?

Did you just remove the center resonator and put a couple pipes in their place? Did that make a sound difference? I have been wanting a better sound from the 420sel, but I'm afraid to spend money and have the car sound like crap.

It might sound slightly deeper, but there's very little change in the sound. If you get holes in your resonators, you'd be safe in cutting them out and replacing them with pipe.

It can be done...but I'd look to get a proper set of manifolds/headers on there first..you'll see far more gains via that avenue over fiddling with the stock system..
