Wineberry 500E (Barney) opinions
Hey guys, I found this 1993 Wineberry 500E in fairly good condition with 68K miles, 2nd owner, all records.
The guy said the hood needs to be repainted, and the rear suspension squeaks. He could do it, or subtract the amount from the purchase price. There's also a bumper ding front & rear. Any idea how much should be subtracted, and what a fair price would be? Is this color hard to resell? Any other opinions and/or caveats? Thanks, :-) neil 1988 360TE AMG http://www.silcom.com/~neilv/sportline |

I think that is a relatively rare color in US. The car looks a little neglected, but maybe with some polish and whatever ....
What is he asking for it? It isn't a bad color, but might put some people off a tad. I kind of like it, myself.

I agree with John, it looks neglected. Maybe it's just dirty after a light rain, I don't know. Either way, I like the color as well.
A couple things I noticed... The windshield has been replaced (or the MB sticker removed) Possible paintwork on the left rear fender Lower body cladding has prob. been painted; The bumper covers have definitely been painted No factory phone Needs new antenna mast AMG rear muffler If the hood needs to be painted than either it has been repainted in the past or the car spent alot of time in the sun...how does the roof and deck lid look? If it's sun damage, then the dash took a beating as well. Resale value? Why? Seriously, I don't think the color will make much difference if the car is well kept. From this point on, only enthusiasts would consider buying one...and the rarity of the color would likely be a plus. Good luck. |

Interesting color! The dealer's wife in Austin had one in a similar color, may have been cabernet.
Nice AMG upgrades ( wheels, muffler ). Is the engine stock? How is the interior? Could be a good daily driver, but probably a bit rough to qualify as a garage princess.

Price should probably be function of the following (random order):
a) How does it drive/ sound/ track/ handle/ respond? b) Maintenance on time and documented c) Carfax d) How do you feel about the aftermarket pieces on the car? any receipts? e) Color, OK with you? Can you live with it? f) Do OEM wheels come with the sale? g) Compression test/ leak down test- through inspection h) Fluid Leaks/ condition of fluids g) pricing: KBB, Edmunds, autotrader.com (market values on similar cars), there' a ton of 500e/e500's for sale at autotrader.com! h) what is your intended use and condition you would like the car in? if it is a daily driver, then probably restoring the finish to showroom wouldn't be a priority...if you want a showpiece, then it appears that the finish will need $$$ to repaint (glasurit?) from the pics, it looks like it had more than ~68K as we've seen nice 100K examples that are quite fresh looking in the mid $20k's on up (one for sale by Mark Herzig- a member here) if you can get the car for a steal, and know what you are getting into, it might be worth living the dream. otherwise, there appears to be quite a few well kept ones currently for sale good luck -fad Last edited by -fad; 08-21-2001 at 01:06 PM. |

If it needs paint, figure about $400 per panel to have it done by a top-quality shop.
I think that's a nice color, and it's not too extreme of a color so I'd think it would have little impact on the car's value. Glen-good job! The only things I'd contest: the antenna-might simply need lube (mine has stuck at about the same position, and once lubed worked perfectly). And the factory phone issue-how could you tell there's no phone? Unquestionably they painted the lowers later on-I'd bet they used a gloss clear coat as well, as opposed to the OE satin clearcoat. And the impact strips are supposed to be black. As to the rear suspension squeak, that's a tough one....only way to isolate the noise is to lubricate, one at a time, the rear suspension links. If they squeak, you can get temporary relief from high pressure grease, but eventually the link would need to be replaced (most are not too expensive). Lastly, I believe Standox was the factory paint. Good luck Neil!

I don't know about the '92-'93's, but the impact strips on my '94 is the same color as the bumper cover. I looked at Dean's on his website and its the same too.

Randall & others
Yup, they went to bumper-colored impact strips for '94. Spme do prefer the look; in my case (Almandine Red) I think the contrasting impact strips look good, and I could've had them painted for no charge when they were installed (other paint work being done). Also, I go for originality whenever I can.

It's funny, I've been looking at everything I can find about these cars since I bought mine early in the year and I never noticed the painted vs. non-painted impact strips.
I wondered how everyone knew this car had some paintwork done. Randy '94 E500 |

wineberry? must be the US name for the colour. the german catalogues list the colour as bornit. in canada it's known as blackberry. it's a rare colour in north america, but by no means difficult to come by. any mb dealer/authorized body shop will be able to get the paint as i have seen several 124s, 140s and even a few 201s painted in the same colour in and around vancouver.
as a point of interest, i've even seen a couple of dodges with the same colour. i can't really tell from the pics but it looks as if the lower body cladding has been painted the same colour as the metal? originally, the lower body of the car was painted violetgrau (code 166). obviously the impact strips have been painted as several people have already noted. the impact strips went body colour for the 1994 model year. it was part of the remodel which included a new front end as well as rear trunklid updates. before '94, impact strips were black. i don't think the colour will have much effect on resale price since there are so few of these cars in north america. tell me, if you had the opportunity to buy a 300sl gullwing would you harp about the colour? unlikely. we've never had anything but compliments about the colour of our blackberry 500E. personally, i don't particularly like the rims that are on the car, nor do i like the beige interior. a black leather interior sets the bornit off morethan a light one. but that's just MY opinion. so long as the car is mechanically sound, has no hits and you can live with the colour, you should be happy with it. the squeaking could mean its time to replace the suspension bushings which, if the car's really been driven, is not uncommon.

Those rims are likely both light in weight and expensive. They're not particularly my cup of tea either, but I'd trade them for mine (AMG 17" 5 spoke) in a minute to lose about 10 lb/wheel in unsprung weight

For some reason, my car has an external cell antenna in addition to the one built into the telescoping power antenna. Because this car didn't have one I jumped to the conclusion that it didn't have a phone. Oops. And you're probably right, a little lube should fix that antenna! |

I just saw a car this color on my way in to work-too bad it was a rather filthy, beat-up '92 300E. I bet it's a great color when it's clean! The lower body cladding was a lighter color, and didn't look real good, at least on this particular car-probably the worst kept W124 I've ever seen

Here in The Netherlands nine out of the ten W124's are this color!
i've looked for a while for a 500E and most of them are BORNIT. It looks good on the car especially with the bottom painted in the same color. The bottom is originaly a lighter type of grey (which is not so nice) Roald |
