1984 AMG 500SE - allegedly...

I looked at this car today - a bit rough, in particular the interior. The owner's son is selling it. Claims his dad bought it in Germany and it had AMG modifications. I'm THINKING it was just cosmetic on the exterior. The car looks like a stock 500SE, except for the front air dam, it's lowered, MAYBE AMG wheels, and maybe the skirts. I ran the VIN on the Russian site, and it comes up delivered in Germany.

Frankly, I'd only be interested in the car IF it had engine mods. So, my question is, how do I tell if it had any? And, what else should I look for?

TIA

check the heads/block for an AMG serial number stamping which would indicate that the motor was tuned by AMG. It should be near or replace the serial number from the factory on the motor.

Keep in mind that until the 190E 3.2, AMG did not market a complete car, and all the tuning done was ala carte' choices by the owner.

I thought all AMG engines were signed by the mechanic who built them. Or is that just a more recent development?

I thought on the older cars, before MB and AMG had a "relationship", MB required all the factory Benz identification to be removed from the car... Or am I getting that confused with something else?

Car has the front bumper, side skirts, and rear bumper. Sharp looking car in that color. I can't really help on the engine though.

On the early engines, there wasn't much of a place to put a signature plaque, so that is a post-merger item. Aside from the obvious clues like badged valve covers or the oddball extra air large air intakes, then exterior of the engine could appear quite normal. Engines tuned by AMG should have a unique serial number stamp on the block.

No, the MB logos remained, from the hoodstar, all the way back, to the rear deck.

Theres usually a sticker on the valve cover itself. What about how it drives?

Sometimes there is a sticker, sometimes not..all depends on how they were feeling that day or what the customer wanted as far as badging.

First thing I'd do would be to check for headers (not just the euro logs)... beyond that you'll want to pull the valve cover and have a look @ the back of the cam for AMG markings.

If you don't see either of those items chances of any motor work having been done are slim to none.

The only engines that were 'signed' were the 32V twin cam conversions, and by signed they were stamped, and their signature was a 2 diget #.

All the AMG's still have their factory VIN, only #'s I've seen them modify are the engine numbers.. again on the twin cam conversions.

If you're ambitious, check the front suspension components. They had a series of modifications for those too. -CTH

Quite... AMG springs can be either white or red..black only showed up on the Gen II cars from what I have seen.
Also, the Bilsteins should have AMG embossed towards the lower mount..it can often be hard to discern w/o cleaning the shock tube first.
You can also check the diff w/ any marks alluding to anything other then the stock 2.24.

Looks like AMG body kit and suspension along with correct period wheels.
Probably done by an AMG dealer/installer in Germany.

You indicate it as a German delivery car.
But was it a USA spec car that the owner took "German delivery" or was it a Euro spec car.
If a Euro specs there should be a a "Federalization" sticker, possible on the door jamb, that would indicate when imported and who conformed it to DOT/EPA ?
This would apply if the vehicle was brought into the country prior to 1999?

Not sure but with the seventeen digit VIN a Carfax may be available?
