190e Max rpm

Hi,

Does anyone out there know of the max rpm that a 190e 2.3-8v with pretty much stock internals can get to before approaching valve bounce/broken con rods etc... What is the weakest part of these engines?

You may wonder why I ask - I've supercharged my little 190, the engine is blueprinted, has low compression pistons and the head has been ported and polished. I currently have the ecu set to the stock rev limit of 6250rpm but it gets in the way when I'm really pushing it as my peak power is at around 5600-5700rpm and from there it jumps up to the limiter pretty damn quick.

Anyone know the limits of these engines?

Thanks,

Blair

In stock form 6,200 is a good point to shift as you have figured the torque is done at 5,7000. Valve "clash" is around 7,200 & I can show you the results of that!

Hi MB Doc,

So you think I should be safe to set the rev limit to 6700rpm? I would probably only ever take it to around 6500 or so but I would like the headroom.
Currently the rev limit gets in the way, my peak torque is from 3000rpm to rev limit (pretty much flat) and my peak power is from 5500rpm to rev limit. Increasing the rev limit will allow me to stay in the power band longer as there is obviously more there. It will also allow me to still be in the power band after a gear change.

I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't going to get anywhere near instant destruction of the engine at that sort of rpm.

Thanks for the reply,

Blair

P.S. If you are interested you can check out my car at the hompage listed in my profile.

Wow
Blairc,
That is one of if not the smoothest 190's I have ever seen. If I were to get a 190 I would try to make it look like yours. How did you get the grill on the car, was it cut off a C-class and welded on your car? Because it looks awesome.
The only thing I would do would be is to paint the bumpers but that is just my preference.
Who made the Supercharge and was it custom or a kit.
Awesome car!!!

6,700 is a good shift point! When I raced the 8 valve motor I would shift at that point & only allow 5th to get to 7,000 or higher.

Hi, Thanks Subman,

The C Class grill was a big pain in the butt, I got hold of a shroud to take the grill and yep it was painstakingly welded onto my existing bonnet, I still can't believe that they can join two pieces of metal like that and not see a seam at all.

I've thought about colour coding the bumpers but I like the black with the black tail lights and tinted windows and I'm worried about going too far with colour coding.

The supercharger was all custom, a friend of my dads made up all the piping and bracketry etc...

Cya, Blair

Blair,

Beautiful Car!!!!!!

Very Nice job.

I think ti looks great. The steering Wheel looks very good, if I didn't have the airbag, I'd look for one like that, it's very nice.

I see the supercharger is at the bottom of the engine, that must have taken some real creativity to make it fit.

The Wheels look very nice on the car.

The car must be a real screamer...

Alon

Thanks Alon,

Yeah the little old 190 goes pretty well now, I love annoying Honda S2000 drivers in my Benz ;-).

The sway bar had to be modified a bit but other than that the supercharger fitted in there pretty well. Next step is the interior - more $$$

My next project will be convincing my Dad that his ML55 is in need of a supercharger - now that would be fun!
