W124 coilovers

I am bored, and have an extra wagon and welder.... And a coilover setup off my friends BMW.




So, I got thinking, and want to build coilovers for my wagon.... Anyone ever see coilovers for the W124? Would this be a first??

Since the W124's front suspension is nearly identical to the W201, I can offer the following:

I believe a custom race setup was built by an owner in Europe;

For a street, there are a couple of problems with tire/wheel clearance, suspension geometry and reinforcing the strut tower mounting.

Is it worth all that?

Yes....



I got 500E bars, sportline springs, Bilstein HDs, and my wagon still has roll... I want to stiffen it up, and make it a better cornering machine.

I know KW used to sell coilover suspension packages for the W124. It doesn't look like they offer them anymore though... http://www.kw-suspension.com/en/30_Products/60_Product_Finder/index.php?modell_1=E-Class&level=3&hersteller_1=MERCEDES&gruppe=all

My 300E is stiff and flat with Eibach springs and swaybars with Koni adjustable shocks however, it still doesn't feel as balanced as my 500E. When was the last time you changed all your suspension rubber? They wear over time and add a lot more slop than you'd think they would.

If I remember correctly, The AMG hammer had a 25K PM cycle on their suspension bushings and sub-frame mounts.
I'd imagine 5K on the flex disks!

It still has roll? You need a 4-matic wagon, you'd be surprised how much better they take hard turns. I've heard from old dealer techs that got to take all of the new cars out to a test track that the 4-matic wagon was consistently the second fastest on the track behind the 190E 16V, not b/c of power (185hp) but b/c they had surprising grip in the curves. I work on Mercedes all day, every day for the last decade. There are few mercedes that feel as tight in a turn as a 124ch 4-matic wagon.

I sincerely doubt that a coilover setup would help with body roll enough to justify the effort involved. The current setup has the strut serving double duty as the upper pivot point for the steering knuckle. Without it you'll have some serious engineering to do just to hold the car up, much less produce acceptable geometry.
