Thumbs up 300e shifting

i have noticed in my 88 auto 300e that when i have the pedal mashed(and push the button at the bottom of the accelerator) when it shifts there is a sort of surge of acceleration... i was just wondering if anyone could tell me what that was... im not sure if that fits this forum... oh well whatever any help would be apreciated

If you are starting from a standstill, the car will always start in second - mash the throttle and it drops into first and ...wooooosh!
you're off! The transmission is doing what it is supposed to.

Cheers

Not from a start, but at the very end of the gear, at high revs, after or when 1st/2nd gear disengages and it is shifting into the next gear. It's like a surge of speed, and theres no real reason for it. I'm not pushing the pedal harder or anything. Its just weird because its a serious surge in speed.

At the point when it shifts you are probably past the peak of your torque curve. Imagine if you look at a curve of torque versus RPM that it would look something like an upside-down U shape.

When your tranny shifts, it is putting you back closer to the peak of your torque curve and you're feeling the incremental increase in torque as the rush of power.

but its like *between* the gears... if the car is not in gear, wouldnt torque be ineffective? i dont really know how else to explain it, it is weird tho

Dante,

What you are describing is called "flaring".

Depending on how bad it is, you can adjust the transmission vacuum modulator and it may help or even resolve the flaring problem.

Do a search on "flaring" or "vacuum modulator". You will see many messages covering the problem and how to adjust the vacuum modulator.

1983 240D does the same thing

I have a 1983 240D (as the name would give away) and it is the slowest damn car every time except when it is in the middle of changing gears... as a kid riding in it my father and I would laugh at it because our heads would actually be thrown back into the headrest... just thought you would like to know you aren't the only one!
