Cometic multi layer steel head gasket
 

I was looking into some different head gaskets for the m104. My goal is to drop the compression for more boost and timing.
I was talking to Cometic about their gaskets and it seems that they may have something for us.
Cost is about 320.00 a piece but it can be made in different bore sizes and thickness.
If it is not a match then there would have to be a minimum order of 150 gaskets.
I was wondering what the interest in this would be. The mls gasket is what is used on modern engines and they simply do not leak. They are available for many engines in the aftermarket from honda to audi. I was going to check with the details of both options from them further for my own use. But if I have to order 150 thats a no go.

headgasket.com makes a copper one for $135.00?

I talked to them today and they said it was 180 and I am not fond of the copper gasket for a daily driver. The Cometic mls gaskets are tough and do not leak. I know its not the cheapest but probably the best. I am still thinking about doing pistons instead but have not decided.

Man can you clarify what it is you don't like in copper gaskets?? i have one on now for almost 5 months, running gr8 cost me 60 usd to custom make. If any issues i should expect!!!! i would like to know.

It is just that copper gaskets are prone to leak a little. Not always, but they can be problematic. I am still considering this myself.
The steel gasket that Roman has is 220.00 U.S. dollars. I will have to find out were they got it. I can not imagine to many people are making them.

You can get copper too or if you want steel or SS and mhow many layers do you want.

Udualy it is 3 layers that: 2pcs with 1mm and 1pcs 1,5mm
Or 7 layers with 0,5mm steel

Cometic makes them for the m120 v12. I am almost positive that the right bank is the same as the m104. I am double checking this.
I am curious about how you seal yours with out the raised ridges to compress.
My goal is to simply drop compression. But if I have to spend too much money I would rather just get new pistons. They seem to be the first thing to go.

How thick is the stock gasket?

It is about 1.87 mm thick before installation.

I would look to pistons personally...How far are you trying to drop compression? I half suspect that Mahle even has a low compression M104 piston in their catalog as MB was usually pretty good about that sort of thing.. You could even get a 119 in 8.5-1 according to the WIS.

That is where I am leaning at this point. Figured there was not a lot of reason to spend 400+ dollars on a thicker gasket if I could get pistons for 1000. I talked to a supplier for CP and I might go with them. I will check mahle though.
Still would like the Cometic gasket. They do not leak. I have been talking to some other friends and we are all pretty confident that the gasket from the m120 will work. I think I am going to order a stock one in and check it out and return it. Then I will know. Maybe I will see if there is a volume discount. Will sell them to people instead of stock gasket.

While on the topic of pistons I'm getting very close to putting a big order (40+) in w/ CP...if you are interested we could get your pistons along with..should provide some savings! I'll see if I can dig up a stock M104 piston and if you like I could send it off for a quote etc..
