500E Exhaust

Does anybody know what size the two pipes are that enter the resonator? I just bought a new muffler and was surprised to see that the input is only 2.75" in diameter. Seems kind of small for a 5 liter. What's everbody's thoughts? Is it because the gasses are cooler and more dense the farther you get from the engine?

I think the inlets are 2.5", no?

And I'm curious-why did you replace your muffler? It's Stainless so shouldn't have corroded, eh? Just curious.

I got a Remus muffler! Can't wait to put it on - it looks like a work of art. Should sound really good. I'll decide later if I also want to do the Y-pipe too instead of the resonator ala Hendy. BTW, does anyone know what the stock muffler weighs?

If we have dual 2.5" pipes, the area = 9.82 sq. in.
If we have dual 2.25" pipes, the area = 7.95 sq. in.
If we have dual 2" pipes, the area = 6.28 sq. in.
Then when they come together, we have a a single 2.75" pipe, the area = 5.94 sq. in.

This is the basis for my original question. Why did they neck it down to a single 2.75" pipe and does it matter?

Morning Randy- my thought regarding, -exhausts for the discriminate- is that there is a bit a science involved

ie exhaust tuning, back pressure rates/measurements, air flow stats, appropriate and desired restriction level, etc....and that each piece of the exhaust system works in harmony with the rest of the powertrain

not unlike the process in dialing in race cars/ or race bikes...

on race bikes, just adding a bolt-on (aka slip-on) rear muffler/pipe won't add significantly to performance ...we usually dial in a mated fuel delivery upgrade & as much air intake as possible to take max advantage of the exhaust mod (not to mention black box/ chip upgrades)...oh and CA smog is most always removed too.

hope this helps
