Anyone try an STS turbo?
The Squires Turbo System seems like the ideal set-up for the tight engine compartment of my E500. Their remote turbo is usually installed in place of the stock muffler, but I have this big insulated well where the cats used to be.
Anyone have experience with STS? I hear several 928's run them.

It will work fine as long as you keep the boost under 7-8psi. I'm not going STS but I am making my own rear mount turbo for my next mercedes.

Yeah I personally think going with a rear mounted turbo is the best option for the 500E. The under hood temps are high enough much less the available space unless your willing to give up your ABS and washer bottle. The only negative of this system is that you will experience some lag due to the length of piping the exhaust and intake supply. You will also loose some pressure but no big deal. The turbo lubrication system would also have to be separate from the engine and you'd need a scavenge pump to lift the oil. Kinda like a mini dry sump. The system should easily fit into the well on the left side of the trunk conveniently located right under the original muffler housing. I think it would be a great project, maybe one day I can afford to give it a try. Adam

This will still be hard to get the piping back up to the intake. Also I would put it further back so you can get some ground clearance. It would be much easier to do a side mount supercharger. The easiest would be a centrifugal with the setup of a domestic v8. All you need is a mounting bracket and belt configuration and the piping with a bypass valve.
Definitely keep the boost low. The late model m119 has an open deck. This makes the gasket weak and the cylinders, but it can handle 4-6 psi. |

Well I havent seen this setup but I can say to get the most performance out of the turbo you really do want it as close to the exhaust valve as possible. This has got to be a compromise.

I was talking about where the cats use to be. The sts system does use a scavage pump. I have looked at these online but never seen one in person. As far as room for a supercharger I just relocated the washer reservoir.

If you really wanted to implement a supercharger on the M119, the Kleeman screw incorporated into the intake manifold would be the best way to go however, this option is far from cheap. I asked Kleeman a while back if they would be interested in designing a SC for the M119. Unfortunately they are not.
I'm really looking froward to a forced induction AMG 6.2L. I hear they are going for twin turbos. I WANT!

Given what Kleemann charges I'd rather fiddle w/ an Eaton, but besides that I think rear mount would work nicely on a 119.. I know some people in Japan have done front mount turbos, a-la:

I've seen numerous video's and read a few articles on the STS turbo's..and for low (5-8 lbs) applications they really appear to work quite well. The Trick is to spec the piping out properly as to keep velocity up going back to the turbo.. Also, I'd think one could do a Very nice/trick twin turbo mount where you could just barely see the compressor wheels in front of the rear bumper making for quite the image for who ever you pass in the evening;-) Jonathan

I had thought of doing a twin turbo like that, but you just have to sacrifice so much of the car. I still think that a rotrex stuffed on the side by or in place of the smog pump would be the easiest. It would also be the cheapest.

Just to clear a few things up. I had a STS Camaro Z28/SS kit I was going to put on my mercedes and the STS kit uses a very well thought out and engineered oil return. The oil comes from the engine, in this case it would come from the auxilary hole in the oil filter assembly. The oil returns via a electric scavenge pump exactly like the one RS-R makes and deposits into the valve cover oil cap. The pump can pull and or push oil, up or down, up to 6 feet and probably 50+ feet on flat surfaces. The pump it self has an alarm system to warn of a pump failure or overload. I sold the kit to a friend with a 04 GTO and he put a T70 masterpower turbo in the rear. He runs no intercooler but still sees stock air intake temperatures due to the nearly 10 feet of intake pipe. Also since the turbo is correctly sized for the motor it is always on the brink of boost and lag is non existent. The car makes almost 500 to its backwheels and he has yet to experience a problem. The car is a daily driver and is lowered but the turbo doesnt have so much as a scuff on it. It is tucked up into where the rear muffler is and is clearly out of the way. The scavenge pump is located in his trunk and is covered over by a pair of amps. The pump has no problem pulling up the oil and pushing it all the way back to his oil cap on his valve cover. The only draw back is minor: you will need a turbo timer set for around 60 seconds because if you dont a small amount of oil will pool around the turbo drain and you will get a little bit of oil burn smoke on start up.

Whipple, do they make a rotrex big enough to feed a 5L and fit in that small a package?

I highly doubt that. With 25 feet of piping, back to front, their is DEFINATELY going to be some lag no matter how well the turbo is matched up to the engine. Anytime your not moving air into an open space, their is lag in pressure differential, input and return. Now, no doubt the STS system rocks. However, lag is inevitable.
