BIG Brake Upgrade W124

For the last few years I've dreamed of doing a BIG Brake Upgrade on my 1993 W124 (3.2L). The stock 294x25mm front rotors and 4 piston ATE Calipers are not bad but now with over 400hp under the hood I've been feeling the need for larger brakes. The solution is the 334x32mm rotor and Brembo Calipers used on the 99-02 SL500/SL600. As others have shared here before these are a direct fit for the W124s with later model control arms (93 1/2- 95 )There is a slight modification you'll need to make to the dust shield but other than that it's a bolt-on. (Minimum 17" wheels required) The Sl500/600 Brembo calipers are rare and difficult to find used, it looked for several years for a deal. To complete the setup I used new Zimmerman Rotors with new Stainless Steel Brake lines. Rather than ramble on about the setup I'll direct you to the photo documentation of the project via this link...

Attached is another break thread. I posted my solution in there for a 560SL using 1996 SL600 breaks. As far as I know, all 129's the 560SL and the 124's use 124 suspension and break parts. Therefore this was a bolt on for the 560SL. The 1996 SL600 is a 400HP car weighing in at over 4000 Lb. So those breaks should be adequate for a lighter 124 with 400HP. They will also fit in a 16 inch wheel.

334mm x 32mm is a big break

Looks good..!
Just a couple of recommendations..
One, next time you paint the calipers I'd mask off the rubber around the pistons.

Also, you may want to paint the non friction surfaces of your rotor..helps keep down on hub corrosion (I'd also add a layer of anti corrosion spray/grease what have you..) too..

While on the topic, E420 brakes make a Great upgrade for an base 190 (ie, non 16v).. I just swapped them out on my 2.6 w/ a 5spd and the difference is night and day. Went from single piston calipers w/ a 10' rotor to 4 piston and an 11.5 inch rotor.. Stops a 2800 lb car Quite nicely!

It's a tight fit...

but works real fine! 17" wheels required.

Thx

Thanks for the feedback. I've since added the white Brembo stickers to the Calipers and love the overall look. Stopping performance is better than anything I've ever owned/driven before.

Impressive to see your RWHP over 350 @ 9psi! Very nice! I'm in the middle of building a turbo manifold for a 'spare' M104 engine I have sitting in the garage. My current M104 with blower now has over 200K on it. I'm going to have the second engine with turbo built and ready to drop-in when the current M104 eventually dies.

Which pads do you have loaded? I have porterfield R4S in mine. I also have the drilled rotors from the factory. The monoblock clearance is tighter than I had anticipated. The EVO ii wheels clear nicely as need2speed posted.

Here is some brake info for you.

http://www.w124performance.com/docs/mb/W124/

and it's spelled brake

break is what happens to glass when it drops on the floor.

Thank you, that is all.
