Just dropped $2600 on my S600
Ouch...
Replace ABC pump, leaking trans lines. Need to replace front and rear pads to the tune of $600. Yeah, right. I'll do that myself. So time to chip it! http://videos.streetfire.net/video/Mercedes-S600-on-Nitrous_156718.htm |
I know it's legitimate, but an ABC pump sounds like one of those muffler bearing, blinker fluid parts.
|
|
Hmmm.... Want to trade a blue wagon for a Black S600?
Was the pump leaking? |
Always fun to watch the "rodeo" gimmick when the system is being bled. make a low rider envious.

Cool to watch! Expensive to pay for! |
I've put $1K into the 740i and it still won't get rid of the CEL.
Looks like a MAF next.........another $250. and climbing......... |
Hope it wasn't all in quarters. That would have put a dent on the roof.

Dang Swede, that first vid is wicked.
You gonna do it? |

Mine has some electric malady that effects the L side. Heat blows cool only on L side. I get a warning saying either the front or rear L tire is low, even though it isn't. L fog in kaput, alarm goes off by itself, and it needs some front end work. I'm betting all that would cost $2k to repair. |

A W140 was for sale by owner here locally a year or so ago. I think it was S500. It was immaculate, one-owner, dealer-maintained. Black/Black. The doors close like a vault. Inside was silent. It accelerated HARD for such a large, heavy vehicle. I got to Rayne before I left Lafayette and came back younger. I loved that car. I could hear myself calling my broker for some cash. But then I started remembering all the Threads of Dread. You gotta be a great mechanic or willing to pay the price. I can do neither. I'm happy with my current E-Class Mercedes. But I sure understand the seduction of the S-Class. B |
Let's admit it, cars suck ...

I think the S class is one of the best sedans you can buy, but they sure are not cheap to live with. |
Once the ABC issues started on my 600, I had problem after problem after problem. I put $10,000+ in my 600 due in a years time due to ABC issues, coil packs, Intercooler pump, and other misc issues.
It might be a good time to trade it in on a newer one with a warranty. You will come out ahead and have a newer car. Get rid of the anchor before it drags you under. If you have not replaced the coil packs, you will soon. They all seem to fail around 50,000 to 75,000 miles. Each side is around $3,000. Don't forget the $1,500 spark plug change that's needed at 75,000 miles. Once you get out of warranty, the 2003 and later 600's are realllllly expensive to own. |
Yes, I've read they get really $$$ after 50k miles. Thanks for the reminder.
My brother took delivery on a C63 a few months back, he really likes it. The big 12's really rev me up however. I'll have to find the right car before making a move. |
The C63's are nice but too small. Go for a S or CL65 with a CPO warranty. Make sure the warranty is the 3 year extended and not just the 12 mth. I like the twin-turbo V12's too. That's one sweet engine. It's a shame the ABC is such a pain. The GL has 4-matic while the SL, CL an S have proble-matic.

Ted just bring it here next time you take a trip this way, I'll help you out ;)
on a side note, I saw the worlds fastest S600 last weekend. 10.58 1/4mi! http://photo.thegetlucky.com/img/v6/p324331538-5.jpg not the same car but this one was badass too! http://photo.thegetlucky.com/img/v0/p213035266-5.jpg |
how many turbos on that second car?

Who owns that bad-ass S600? Do you have any info on the motor? What a monster & thanks for the pics! :) Edit: Oh ok, that car is owned by "Oxygen". I've seen his posts at MBWorld... |

Do you think that nice little package would fit nice and neat like under the hood of a 107. |
haha probably not. The first car blelongs to Steve and I forget his last name at the moment. I dont recall who had the second one, but Oxygen gets credit for the pics, he has a silver S600 iirc.
Ted, gimmie a list of what all needs to be dne on the car and we'll go from there. |
Did you se that S600 at an autocross, John? Those are muy impressivo!

Didn't realize this, but he's apparently the fastest MB overall as well.

Wow, those are some fast E55's.
I wonder how many of those cars are bone stock? |
Whats the story with number 23? Thats screaming fast for a diesel!
I'm guessing the stock 135hp na 606 is long gone.:D |

We need more Mercedes at my local track.... Show all the ricers and such. |

See if you can't dig up some details. All the cars on that list are pretty fast out of the box, but making a NA diesel run with tuned CL65's and S600's is something. He must have a Myna pump on that car and some pretty trick stuff.
|
Sometimes I wonder if everyone on this forum is over exaggerating when it comes to reliability...I mean, almost all of us are used to the unusually reliable W123/6 diesels...so basically ANY other car would be labeled "expensive and unreliable" in comparison. amirite??
I owned my 1993 S420 for a while, and there was never really any weirdness, nothing broke while I owned it, and I put close to 10k miles on it. The door close assist never worked properly and the Bose amp needed to be replaced, but that's it. Everything else on that car worked perfectly, and it felt great to drive, even with 160k miles. That's the newest MB I've ever owned though, so I can't really comment in the 03+ S600's...but I really don't think that a car that cost so much new would be as unreliable and crappy as so many on this site would have you believe. |

The #1 S600 is running NOS as well...

I have found Mercedes to be pretty damn good compared to Jag's.
Mercedes are pretty reliable as high end cars go. |
I wouldn't expect any V12 to be reliable. I'm betting it's durable as all hell and will last a long time.
|
Whatever you do, stay away from the M137 V12's. STAY AWAY!
