i saw the sl55 today

I was at the F1 Grand Prix in Indianapolis this weekend, and was sitting in the Worldcom Sweet, when out of nowhere I heard something going around the track that sounded like a freaking stock car. "What was that I thought", and I go outside and about a minute and 45 seconds later, I see and hear the new AMG SL55 safety car going about 160 down the front straightaway. To put it in perspective, the car was LOUDER than the Porsche Supercup Cars and Ferrari Challenge Cars. IT was a silver car with about 14.5 inch brakes and 19 inch wheels. Well, I later went on the Pit Walkabout and Got to see the car first hand. They had 2, onw with the top up, and the other with the top down. They had full racing seats and seatbelts, paddle shift, and a roll cage. On the Side of the car, next to the "M3-like" gill slits, it said "V8 Kompressor" My uncle got to talk to Burt Maylander, who is the Saftey Car dirver and his friend, and he said that without ESP, the car was uncontrollable. Yet, this was not the regular SL55, for it had been lightenedd up and boosted up. He estimated that this car had upwards of 500 hp, and the exhaust was an unreleased, unobtainable AMG race exhaust. This was the most beautiful car I had ever seen. Just thought Id tell you to watch F1 on Speedvision or something and try to get a glance of this car because you will not believe your eyes. Not to mention that parked next to it was the C32 Estate with also an unbelievable engine note, but when they both left the pits one after another, the sl55 made the c32 look like it was in reverse. Well, ask me anything if you want to know it!!

Hm Are you telling my. It was the new SL with the retractable top. OR are we talking the S55 safety car and pace car.

hms59 09-30-2001 10:55 PM

no, it was the new SL with the retractable hard top, not the S Class

I was at Indy too, and also saw the SL55, sounded pretty mean.

However, Dan Kary's 5.8 litre supercharged CLK sounded meaner even though that car has cats and the AMG had race pipes.

I had the pleasure of running with Dan at Summit Pointe. I was running 125 or so down the straight and he went past me as if I was driving an ice cream van.

That car sounded bloody marvellous.

David, tell me more about Dan Kary's car. Who is it tuned by , Brabus, Lorinser or another tuner?

David Hendy 10-03-2001 04:34 PM

it is the Renntech motherload. There was an article on the car in Car and Driver's tuner special a month or two ago, also, featured in the One LAp this year, but broke down at the first event.

The car is outrageous. Racing cage, rear spoiler, two fuel cells, racing seats harnesses, everything you could possibly add to a CLK!!

I have seen the SL55 AMG on the IAA...I have enjoyed the drivers side seat...but didn't experience the joy of hearing the engine...

Am I the only one who likes the V-8 Kompressor badge? The rims are OK.

Love everything about the car except the wheels, they are not distinguished enough for a car of such high caliber IMO.

Oh, is Mercedes listening to its potential customers or what? I keep hearing, "No cheap plastic in the interior" and what do we find in all the newer cars but "cheap looking plastic"?
