Lightbulb Your input: Comfort over HD Bilsteins.. W126

I've read a few of the listing reviews regarding shocks here but I have come up with a few questions. It's time to replace the shocks on the US 85' 380SE and I have been back and forth, since Bilstein does not offer a Sport shock for the car, and as a mild sporting; do you recommed Bilstein Comforts or HDs? A few people listed that they cannot tell the difference in stiffness between to 2 but I drive a bit more pressing... Will the HD's cope with lowering springs?

HDs will cope but IMO wont be ideal. The Sport shocks are basically HD's with a shorter stroke which is what is needed for short springs. I thought there were HDs available for the 126. Guess not.

I think there are Konis though. Great dampers.

The HD's will do you fine.

Apparently Bilstein does make a more agressive shock for Europe..they call them Sprints. I'm trying to see if I can get a special order going on a number of sets.. But in the mean time I run HD's on everything that isn't sitting on AMG spec Bilsteins!

I really like the HDs on my car. I would never go back to the comforts.

I've got the comforts on mine. They're quite and smooth but the ride height didn't change at all. (still looks saggy in the back). I'm going with some MB Spring Spacers to change the ride. I've got to pick them up from the dealership today. I'll let ya'll know how they ride once I put them on.

Shocks don't change the ride height.

I'll wager quite heavily you need new rear springs.

HD's work great with aftermarket lowering springs...that's what I've used for almost two years.
It's a common setup on Porsches...

HDs on my 420 SEL

My car's posture improved big times I felt like a had stolen a newer car. Put HDs in myself 45 minutes... get a friend. They need to break in I find... but they are stiff, if your ride height is too low it affects the shocks

Jake,

On your car.. first off is it lowered? Also how did the ride pan out? I may put HD's in the 560SEC after lowering it..

Chris

Well HDs arent designed for lowering springs, as I said. That's what the Sport shock is for.

So what is your experience with setting up suspensions and why are you so definitive that the HD's aren't designed for use with lowering springs...because you read it somewhere ?

Jonathon..

Difference in the valving.

Comforts more like the OEM valving for a less stiff ride quality

HD / Sport use same valving for a stiffer ride.
