88 560sl exhaust upgrade?
I inherited my 560sl from my Dad when he passed away last year. It's pretty clean and runs well but the exhaust looks neglected and is making some noise. The muffler is shot and I was wondering what I could do in terms of replacing the system. I don't have to worry about emissions where I live. Can I get rid of the cat? Any suggestions on an Up grade that will sound nice and throaty and maybe increase performance? What about the O2 sensor, back presure etc? THANKS!!

Try looking at the SL/C sections of these forums, there is a guy discussing what he is planing to do with his exhaust, he is after almost the same thing as u.

I went with a MagnaFlow muffler, and dual 2.5" pipes from the down pipes back.
With the newer cat designs, no reason to delete them either, as they offer little to no restriction, they still filter the raw gas smell, and you don't have to worry about any potential legal ramifications. That being said, I already had the euro manifolds, so dual made sense. I suspect I may have gone a little overboard with the 2.5", and that 2.25 might have been more appropriate, but it still has plenty of pull, and if anything the exhaust is a little too throaty when under load.

What would be a newer CAT design? As for the euro manifolds whats the difference? What could I expect to pay? |

For a full/proper custom exhaust in stainless w/ dual high flow cats, resonator and muffler expect to drop in the 1400-2K range...

I'm curious as to your rationale behind not running cats?

He probably just wants more power and sound but on a stock 560 it wouldn't make much of a difference. I dont run a cat on my car because I didnt have my car tuned at the time and my turbo melted the stock cats.

Yes, it will.... And running high flow cats won't hurt performance @ all.. Plus, not running cats these days is IMHO, socially irresponsible.
Stock cats may have had difficulty but a properly installed high flow metal substrate cat should be fine, while keeping your car burning considerably cleaner. Jonathan

4" diameter and about a foot long. I'm running two as I rattled every Merc single cat on the dyno.

I meant the difference power in using no cats vs. a high flow cat isnt noticable
Yea the magnaflow one is what I am getting now that Im tuned but I still only have a 2.5 inch exhaust so I gotta save up for a full 3 or 3.5" system.

resonator?
what about removing the resonator, replacing the cat with a high-flow version and a strait through magna flow muffler?
