5 speed manual shifter improvement

Have a sticky shift in my 16v and was wondering if anyone had any information or ideas. I must be the only person wishing my 16v shift was looser!!
Took the shifter off today

Was surprised to see 129 and 124 part numbers on it - surely that is wrong because these cars came along before the 129 (SL) and 124 models?? And the 5 speed getrag is unique to the 201?

Shifter is very stiff - you can't get it into the R-1 plane when holding it in your hand because you can't get the leverage and the springing is so strong. Rods were not that smooth moving either, despite lubrication.

I am not HE-MAN. However I think surely this is fixable? Where is the spring that moves the lever into the 2-3 plane? Is it behind the plastic cap in the last picture? Anyone ever changed this? Are the rods supposed to be a little firm to move?? I'm 6 foot 2 and 150 pounds so had never been mistaken for Mr Schwarzenegger let's say.

Thanks

Have you taken it apart any further? There is a rod along the bottom that of the assembly that moves side to side into the different shift forks/levels and engages/disengages them from the trans and you move the shifter forward and backward. Just had mine out this weekend, took it apart and put some bearing grease on this part and stuck it back in. Mine now shifts very smooth, now if only I could figure out why I have so much trouble getting into 5th!

No I haven't - but I did spray a lot of lubricant in there. I had a vision of spings flying if I took it apart. Anyone know about the springs?

The shifter I disassembled and reassembled was not a getrag, it was out of a 2.3, but the only spring it had was one in the actual handle going up to the shift nob.

Check the fluid level in the trans.
