junk that mechanical fan

I own a 93 W124 300E with a 2.8. I got sick of taking on and off my fan and fan shroud every time I wanted to work on my car. So.... I removed all of that and installed a thermostatic switch that has an either tube that you stick in the radiator and and you can adjust it to what temp you want the fans to kick on at. and when you shut off your car they will continue to run for a short time on and off to keep your car cool.(very little drain on battery) I also installed a panic switch in my cabin just in case something happens. The fans I wired in were my O.E Fans that are up front facing inward for my A/C and the over heat fans. I sliced into the fan harness and added my control switches. I sliced in at the plug for the for the switches by the ABS component or by the left side head light. I had to also remove those fans and clean them out because bugs where in there and what have you and they started grounding themselves so I could not control them they controlled themselves with all the bugs in there they conducted electricity(i didn't under stand that part ether) did a wire tuck with all my wires and it works great. just thought that some one out there might like the idea and try it to. because if you have an m104 engine or just and engine that has a fan less then an inch to the radiator and hated that thing here is a remedy. Works great I've been really happy with it. and it makes your engine much quieter with out that mechanical fan.

thanks for reading. I can send a wire diagram and anything else if people are interested.

Nice work!,iv been interested in doing this for ages but wasnt sure if the dual fans would be sufficient?

Have you had it stuck in traffic on a nice hot day yet?

I'm on my way to the shop now and will take photos for you all and also working on drawing up a nice diagram for everyone. I'm also able to make kits for everyone including wire, temp switch, mounting brackets and screws, also connectors for the wires and the shrink tube. cut and measured. of course in the kits I would include extra length wire with the proper size so you can hide it anyway you want. or just call and say you want the switch and diagram. how every you want it. I work at http://brooklyn300.com/. I would not know a price but when i have a price for each part and then the kit total i will share that as well. I will post again shortly.

for the question of stuck in traffic, I have not had a problem. I also haven't put it through a great demand but so far so good. the thermo switch is adjustable to any temp.

the fan plug that needs to be sliced into, and the ground that goes into that plug you need to eliminate in order to control the whole system(ground controlled system)

Thnx man,
So ur just using the 2 front fans! for where i live and the kind of loads our cars deal with i doubt that would be enough for my cars. I have always wanted to junk that power consuming mechanical fan for maybe another 2 like the ones on the front, as those am sure will do a much better job at controlling water temps.

Where did u get the controller from?

The clutched fan does a much better job at cooling than any electric and has far fewer points that can fail.

Dual Electric Fans

Have to differ with you. An engine driven fan would be lucky to move 1500 cfm at idle but my dual electric fans on my '87 560SEL are rated at 3400 cfm on maximum. In HOT Las Vegas, the dual electric fan (DEF) setup has made a huge difference in the ability of the engine to stay cool and the AC to maintain cold air. My DEF are DC Control model 33212 with an integrated controller that uses a thermistor that is inserted into the radiator fins. Four wires to hook it up and it was done - power/ground, then one to an ignition switched source, and one to the the wire to the AC compressor. The compressor wire told the DEF integrated controller that the AC was in use so the fans then regulated from 50% - 100% rather than the 0%-100%. The power/ground/switched lines are all in a connection block on the secondary firewall just forward of the battery/windshield washer reservoir. Very simple to hook up.

I had the wimpy MB alternator (85amp) on the car and it couldn't handle the 28 amp additional load from the DEFs so I tried the "heavy duty" 100 amp alternator. I was lucky to get 12.5 (!) vdc at an idle and never over 13.4 vdc driving. An alternator rebuild shop here in Vegas made me a custom alternator that I mounted in place of the MB unit - 140 amps and I get 14.0vdc at an idle now. The fans cost $375 and the alternator was $195. VERY well spent dollars!!

It was around 108F last week but driving in the stop-n-go traffic on The Strip, the outside temperature gauge read 122F. The engine got to around 115-117, but did not overheat and the AC was able to keep us cool.

I bet that those two A/C fans can hold up and keep the car kool any where. the surface area that you cover with the fans over the radiator is greater then that mechanical fan. My true felling with it is that those A/C fans will hold up just fine in any heat(with in normal heat rang for places) I think the switch came from JC whitney. Or call and order one from Brooklyn motoren werke in wi

I agree, the stock front electric fan(s) should be plenty capable of doing what mramay spent nearly $600 to do.

Yeah, really. Because the one thing nobody ever says about these older Mercedes' is that they run hot. Never.

Hmmm interesting... I wonder if I can mount the dual fan setup on the back of the radiator.... I can get the fan setup for like $30 at pick and pull.
