Convert from mechanical to electronic speedo (124)
I'm installing a rebuilt transmission from a 126 into my 124, and it uses an electronic speedo pickup rather than a cable. I've located an electronic speedo head from an E420 as well as a Dakota Digital SGI-5 universal speed calibration device to dial in the difference between the diff ratios. Has anyone out there done this type of conversion before, and do you have any insights? Thanks

There really is no need. All you really need to do is remove the tailshaft housing and remove the trigger wheel and repl. it with speedo gear from your original transmission. This is a fairly simple thing to do.

Yeah, I figured that out once the transmission arrived, but in the meantime, I'd already bought the new speedo and converter. This will allow me to play with a variety of diff ratios should the fancy strike. The new speedo also goes to 160, while my stock unit just does 140...I like the optimism it conveys.

Well in that case I would have to say that I have not used one of these calibration devices. The setup should be pretty straight forward though. The pickup from the 126 can be cut out of the stock harness. The speedo simply bolts in the stock location. I use one from a 400e myself. Power and ground and signal. It sure makes removing the cluster a lot easier.

I absolutely hate the mechanical W124 speedometers. I want to convert my 300D to an electronic speedo. I always wondered if we could just swap the tailshaft housing and trigger wheel, i.e. if it was a straight swap from the 400E tranny to a 300E/300D tranny.
The Dakota Digital box will work fine, another one is the YellowBox from Yellr.com, just make sure that you get something that works with a two-wire inductive sensor. |
