Wiring Harness Survey
I'm having wiring harness related troubles with my 93 500E. I wanted to tap into the collective experience of my fellow 500E owners who've had their harness/es replaced.
As stated in another thread, the wires going to the temp sender and temp sensor were frayed. Car was sputtering on idle and initial take off. Upon unplugging the blue sensor, systems were back to normal (although aux. fan is always on). There are several (not all) dash lights that are intermittently on. It seems like the problem (currently) lies with harness 124 440 20 06 (pic below) but I'm debating on whether I should be replacing all harnesses at this point. I wanted to find out, from those who have had their harnesses replaced: 1) Which harness did you replace? Please post part no. or refer to diagrams below. 2) What was total labor time charged? 3) What were the symptoms being exhibited by your car, if any, which led to the replacement of the harness/es? 4) Year and mileage please. Thanks. I guess this would help all others who, at some point, would be faced with the same problems in the future. The fist harness carries a part number of 124 440 20 06 and is a $300-400 part. It seems like this is the one that is most likely to fail due to its proximity to the hot parts of the motor. This is the other harness. (124 440 54 05, approx $1400-1600) I was hoping that this one isn't prone to failing/grounding/shorting as it's really expensive. Don't want to have to replace this one too! (click on pics to for a larger view) Techs, feel free to chime in with any advice....Thanks!

Nice thread, Ricky. I don't have any repair info for you, but I suspect I will be following close behind you going down this path. My car has had an electrical failure three times now that causes the ASR light to go on and sends the car into "limp home" mode. It resets itself when I shut the car off and restart it. Reading other threads about this symptom, I think the repair path will be: first the upper harness, then the throttle speed control unit.

Thanks!
I figured this would be helpful to a lot of people who'd eventually have to go down the same path. Was kinda wishing such a thread existed....

Ricky,
I to will have to do my wiring harness in future. With 171k miles on my 500E the wiring is brittle (Seattle weather car) but everything works with the exception of the ASR light staying on with the ASR system funtioning correctly 100% of the time. My plan is to just order the various connectors and reverse engineer my own. After all, we are only talking about wiring and $500 for wire is a bit much in my opinion. |

Wish I could help here, but I replaced mine while we had the motor out of the car (timing chains, valve guides, water pump, etc.) With 95,000 miles, the harness was cracked and brittle. No adverse problems, Rather than risk it, we replaced the harness.
I add this only as there is a very remote possibility that the old harness is buried somewhere at the shop. I will be back in town next week and will begin a search for the beast.

Dwight,
The harness that you replaced, is it the one that connects to the temp sensors (blue and black)? If it is, then it's the first (less expensive) sensor... Thanks

Sorry to be soooo late... but last week I found my old wiring harness while cleaning out a shed. If any one is still interested, e-mail me as I now have the old one. I believe it is the 06 harness as it was in the $400-$500 range.
