k and n drop in filter!!!

I just ordered a K+N drop in air filter for my 1990 300ce-24. I was wondering what kind of differenceI am going to feel if any. Is there going to be any hp increases or have I just wasted 60 dollars? Thank you guys...

You probably won't notice a big difference other than maybe a more throaty sound on full throttle but just think...you never have to buy another filter...just clean , re-oil and go, definitely not a waste of money by any means. Hope you weren't looking for a sec on your 0-60 times.

I put one on my 72 280SE 4.5 a month ago since the stock filter had 7/12/84 markered on it. It seemed to run smoother but nothing spectacular. Its a good investment long term and a quality product that should last the life of your ownership.

Air flow is not restrictive in these engines...it will likley not make an appreciable difference, according to my mechanics, who have hooked a 560 to a dyno with and without a filter.

I think these K&Ns pander to car buffs who think they can get cheap HPs....there is no such thing on MB.

Get your oil analyzed. I'll bet you have more silicon content in your oil due, to changing the air filter. Had the same result when, I changed out my stock filter on another car for a Amsoil filter.

i tracked down this problem with k&n filters and MAF sensors. apparently the problem arises when you re-oil your filter and there is excess oil that migrates to the MAF wire. allegedly if you follow the proper re-oiling procedure and then wipe off the filter with a lint-free cloth you can avoid the problem. maybe after 50k miles i would just get another k&n filter and trash the old one.

I have K&N in my Ford Explorer, the Ford's MAF sensor is placed very close to the air filter, it's so easy to get contaminated by the excessive K&N oil, since I used K&N, I have to clean MAF at least twice year, when the truck shakes at idle, I know it's the time.

carman850, what did you use to clean the MAF wire?
this should be a warning - there are other k&n type filters that are dripping in oil out of the box. however, i have done a search and could not find a report on this being a problem with MB's. anybody?

Joe, I just use some regular none residual brake cleaner, spray it gently onto the hot wires of the MAF sensor, it has been very effective.

However I read my 400E service CD, it said M119's MAF sensor is self cleaning, it has a periodic program to heat the MAF sensor to over 1000 degree celsius, this should burn out any oil contaminations on the sensor, don't know about in-line 6 engine though.

carman850,

that's encouraging about the self cleaning MAF - i'd like to look that up on my CD, do you remember what section it's in? i tried looking for it and got hopelessly lost as usual.
