Where to cut hole for Turbo Oil drain line?
 

Hey guys. Replacement engine is over @ Performance shop getting leak-down test & comp' test prior to any fab work & install. Engine was out of a stolen, burnt out 90' 300SE :o so, have my doubts. Had to swap PAS pump & trans lines as they were not interchangeable. New Fan Belt & Rotor.

What puzzles me is, the old engine had Turbo drain hole in 'block', NOT sump? I gather this is due to large oil capacity? 6Ltrs? It was originally in sump & then patched & relocated to block apparently to keep it above sump oil level.

What location did you guys use? Really need advice here as I'm over this engine replacement thing @ moment :(

C280nz probably had the best idea for that. He drilled a hole in the side of the block, above the oil pan and drained it that way. It makes the most sense because it's way above the oil level and if you have to take the turbo and drain line off for whatever reason you won't get oil anywhere.

yea do it into the block, that way the steel is thick enough you can tap a thread into it and just screw the oil drain fitting in with sealent and no leak,
you want to put the oil return above the engine oil level so i have heard as it is ment to help save the oil seals in the turbo as there is less pressure on the oil drain.
i cant find the pic but just do it logically, if you want a pic il go take another and post it up

that would be great if you don't mind :cool: Yeah, the old block was done this way but another one to compare would be really good. I was told by the guy who's rebuilding my turbo exactly that (if oil can't drain efficiently, it will damage seals) so this confirms it :)

I piped into the pan...
No problem, much easier then drilling and tapping the block.
Lines under pressure so oil flows easily from the turbos..

i drilled into sump and then welded the connector in, quick easy and deff no leaks!

Worth of notice is that there is always small aumunt of exthaust gases coming from centre of turbo. If feedback hose is down from oil surface it makes bubbles and dosent neccessarry flow freely.
