whipple: I took a look at the quaife website and they seem to sell the 5v units on-line, and made an email inquiry: they referred me to someone @ birds auto in the UK as the people that handle their mercedes applications. Short story is they sell a quaife application for the 500E (sent him my VIN – my car is 1992 MY) but he indicates it's based on a 7v "kit" with a slightly revised design. BTW, Birds costs is about 200Euro higher than the 5v on the Quaife website, so I don't want to be steered wrong. From the prior posts, it would seem that the 7v would not fit my case so I'm wondering if you or anyone may have heard of the birds auto folks and any opinion on the likelihood that they have it right.

He also indicated that i would use the same kit in my 1987 2.3 16v.

Any thoughts?

Their info is wrong. The qdf5v is for the w129 case in the 500e and the 16v is a 185mm ring gear and will not work with any to my knowledge.

Ditto what Whipple said. Bird's is wrong. The QDF5V fits the 500E. I have one in my 1992 500E right now.

There is no Quaife that will work in the stock 190E-16 diff, you'd have to upgrade to a larger diff housing - lots more weight for the 210mm setup, I wouldn't want it unless you had like double the stock power or something.

What available ratios would work with the QDF5V in the 210mm housing?

2.74 to 3.06. I talked to Richmond gear about shims once though and they said that you could have a shim made to run the 3.27 and up ratios. The run-out is of course really important to get right.

Without shims, the only factory ratios that i know for certain work are 2.65, 2.82, and 3.06; at least for the 124/129/140 which use this particular diff.

With shims, you may be able to get ratios numerically higher than 3.06 (i.e., perhaps 3.27) but you can not use gears with ratios numerically lower (i.e., 2.47 or 2.24).

There are factory LSD's available for any ratio you want, btw, with no shims required. See page 4 of this PDF file. The QDF5V is equivalent to factory LSD 126-350-40-23.

You may want to try this place in SoCal:

http://www.autopartsdealer.com/quaife_atb_differential_qdf5v-p503610-p.html

Note that it has an estimated ship date of 10 days out, they probably have to order one. I'm pretty sure that with the current lousy exchange rate (GBP to USD) it would cost more to order one from the UK.

the quaife site lists $775 which at current exchange is about $1035 US. W/shpping the prices is prob a little less. than the site you mentioned, but all-in-all, it may be simpler to go thru them!

775 GBP plus, IIRC, 75 shipping; for a total of 850 GBP. Current exchange rate is 1.55, 850*1.55 = $1325 USD, plus 3% credit card "foreign transaction fee" makes it $1365, plus customs fees wull push it near $1400 USD total. (Trust me. BT, DT.)

Note that the Quaife price is in British pounds (GBP), not Euros...!

hello

this thread perhaps seemed appropriate for my question

i swapped this 2.82 differential out of my 06 c350. i put in the same diff, but with 3.07 gears.

anyway, ive been told it's the same diff from the w210 chassis, as well as found in the SRT8.

what else can anyone tell me about it? does it have the 210mm gearset?

Im trying to sell it, so trying to gather as much info as I can to reach the greatest audience. so, Id appreciate any and all info.

considering I have the same size diff in the car, id like to know which model of LSD (quaife...) would fit it. can anyone tell me that by chance?

thanks!!

The newer diffs (late 90's and all 2000's) are totally different than the older diffs being discussed in this thread (1980's and early 90's). I have no idea about interchange or fitment. Maybe someone else does.

I believe the only 210 survives on in more lowly cars (V6 charger, lil' C class, etc.) but the big benzes, AMG's, and the SRT models got a 215mm Diff which I believe uses the QDF7V (IIRC) LSD. It's an entirely different differential and you'd end up hating your life for years if you tried to make one fit the other.
