Central locking Button on E500

On my older mercs I was able to centrally lock all doors by locking the drivers door. On my E500 '94 locking the drivers door will only lock that door. Though when I lock the front passenger door from the inside with the key out of the ignition all the car locks. Is this normal? From the outside on the drivers door I only have an IR switch wereas on the passenger door there is a key hole.
I was told that I will have to install a center consol mounted switch, that I can operate whenever i need to lock/unlock the doors. Is this common with these cars?

Thanks

I can only give you a partial answer. Maybe someone with a '94 can give you a better one. On my '92, there is no IR lock system - key only. Normally, using the key in the driver's door, front passenger door, or trunk will unlock /lock the entire car. If the driver's interior door lock button is actuated, the entire car responds. My driver's door lock was broken so that when it was actuated, it would operate the entire car, and looked apparently normal, but the driver's door failed to actually lock. It was a broken latch, and cost me a few hundred bucks at the dealer to fix it.

My '94 E500 has no IR lock either. Using the key in either front door or trunk locks/unlocks the whole car.

One cool feature that I wasn't aware of until I perused the owner's manual is that if any window or sunroof is left open after the engine is shut off you can close them by locking the car with the key...simply turn the key to lock and hold the key in the locked position until the windows/sunroof closes completely. You can also reverse the operation by turning the key the other way and holding.

from the outside drivers door, one should be able to unlock/lock all 4 doors for entry or exit

sounds like something needs attention on the drivers locking/locking mechanism

good luck and let us know what turns out

As Glen said "if any window or sunroof is left open after the engine is shut off you can close them by locking the car with the key..." and also by depressing the IR button on the remote for more than 2 seconds. But this also does not work unfortunately. So I suppose there might be some problem with the whole central locking system.
The car is scheduled to go in for service on tuesday Dec 18th. I will keep you all posted.

You're welcome :)
I'm not sure when MB added this feature but it's very handy. My wife's '95 wagon has it also...

Its Called The convience feature. Came out about ealry 1992 I believe. Fadi My 500E is having the same problem. You have a leak in the central locking system somewhere. Do you have a after market but factory installed infared. Your saying in the door handle there is a red and green LED. I never saw that on a 500E. I know all the luxury S classes came with that.

When I lock my car intermitently from the drivers door key on or engine running only the drivers door locks. Sometimes when I wait a while till the Central locking system pump stops runing then it will lock all doors. Next time you start your car push down the drivers door knob observe and listen see if you hear a pump running on for about 30-40 seconds. If you do wait till it stops I bet you'll be able to lock all the doors after that.

Thats whats going on with mine hope this helps.

Hey! Both my '92 500E and my wife's '93 300TE have that convenience feature! Cool! You learn something new every day.
