500E Upgrades exh. etc ???
Here goes. Some of you have been following my thread regarding my BBQ'd 92 500E. At this timeit looks as though I will be buying it from insurance company and doing the work by myself. The main items of concern for replacement are the following.
Exhaust system from cats back- Does anyone make a freer flowing cat system or one that will make more hp than the sock units. I will probably add the center pipe that replaces the center resonator in combo with an after market rear muffler. I need to replace the fuel pumps and filters as well as the basic control module and the diagnostic control module ( where can I get the best prices on these items ?) I may have to replace the main wiring harness as well as the engine harness. It has been suggested to me by a tech at the dealership that rather than replace the entire harness, I might want to buy the harness and do quality splices/ soldering to where the fire melted the covering on the wires at the fuel pump and the two relays/ control boxes under the rt rear passenger seat cushion. Any help or opinions will be appreciated. I want to see what I can add to enhance my car since I will be making all of these repairs. Thanks in advance for any and all help. Alan

I really don't think you'll find a better twin-cat exhaust than the MB unit. You'll find ones cheaper, but not better.
The fuel-pump assembly can be ordered from a quality MB dismantler like Potomoc German Auto or SilverStar Recycling. I got my fuel-pump assembly from them (ask for all hoses, brackets, accumulator, etc.) for under $100. Best of luck! :-) neil 1988 360TE AMG 1993 500E |

Thanks, I am not certain that they need replacement but is good to know. As for the fuel pumps that sounds great since even with a discount new ones run me about $200. each. I will update as things progress. I am still looking for feedback on the main wiring harness ?.
Thanks Alan

Alan,
Can't help you much with the rest, but as far as the exhaust goes, I've spoken or traded emails with a few tuners and they all say (in one form or another) that there is not too much to be gained by messing with the exhaust on a 5 liter 500E. When you go to the 6.0 motor then you need it. However, just doing the y-pipe/resonator transplant certainly will not hurt and may help if there is anything to be gained. Leave the rear muffler stock for stealth/bumper clearance purposes IMO. Either way, good luck with your project. Hope this helps, Lee |

Lee , Thanks for the input. You basically backed up what I have been told so I think I will go the route that you mentioned. I will update as things progress. Thanks and have a great holiday.
