What year/model 300E came with LSD?

Hey Guys,

I'm after a LSD for my 87' 300E. I don't suspect we got too many sports models sent down here to Australia but you never know?

What are the years/models that they came out in in general? Are there any other models that will fit?

Thanks,
Tim.

Well, The W124 came out since day one available with what’s called the ASD option. it is an LSD Diff that is actuated by hydraulic pressure. The system it self has abt 30% locking action in it without the oil pressure, but at speeds below 40km/h and up to 80 km/h the diff can be locked up to 100%.

So if u do find an ASD diff make sure u refresh the clutch packs so u do get the 30% LSD especially since u don’t have the oil pressure to help u out at low speeds.

In my W124 the diff is powerful that i used to put the snow chain on only one wheel, and the diff would lock up 100% i drive out from where i'm stuck on just one chain.!!!

Thanks Jay  I found this old thread form years back (below) which notes the true LSD form the 190 16V 3.07 or 3.27 diffs that fit with little rooting around. Finding one down here would be near impossible unless I stumble upon one :(

There aint nooooo way here are any of these Cosworth 2.3/2.5L 16v's came down here. If they did however, you won't find a LSD lying around some wreckers Jay. I'm going to have to get one from a V8 maybe & customise it? or go with the M104 300E that had the bigger diff perhaps?

Basically, where it stands. The diff in my stock 300E is only good for 200-250hp! That's great since I'll be pushing 350-450wheel hp! Looks like the jigs up for the diff boys ey?

really? One from an RB? Say, 31,32,33? Do you know a good source of info or a forum to contact to find out how it fits & the mods to do etc? This'd gbe great

Looks like they came out first 'standard' in the R32 turbo models as a viscous LSD & also on other models as an option. The R33 came out with an active LSD

Gonna be very hard to find a good Mercedes LSD of any kind here in OZ. There are dome Skyline diffs & they will certainly handle the hp. What I need to know is how do I get it to fit the rear? Surely you'd have to use the entire Skyline Rear end? Maybe fit stub axles etc but how?

You Aussies are handy with a spanner. Have a read of this. The rebuilt manually actuated ASD diff gives 100% lock-up and has been trouble free since installation.

Thanks matsalleh76. I need to look @ all options as they're so limited

Found this info from the older thread that discussed the issue @ hand. This was the conclusion:

The best way to go is instal the complete 190E-16 LSD with the 300E stub axle carriers & input flange & rear cover so it will bolt into a W124

Now. My 'noob' question, just to clear this all up. I would use the 300E axles, axle housings etc complete from hubs (disc rotors) right to diff housing flange form the 190? So all I'm using essentially is the diff itself (housing, guts etc)? What is the crown wheel size of these LSD's anyway? Just wonder how they handle the 400+hp they do?

Due to the fact my 300E has stock diff, I think surely the 2.3 16v full LSD would be the far better option than finding an ASD & fug around with that?

Can someone confirm this pls as I'm considering importing one as I believe these will handle the 350-400rwhp I'll be putting out. I'm not sure if the Skyline RB33 LSD will be as easy to bolt up. I've seen one on a 190E but not a 300E as yet. Shouldn't matter if the stock axle/housings etc are used though?

How badly do you want to stick with a Mercedes diff over trying to adapt a diff from a different vehicle?

I'm in Brisbane and I have a 16v LSD. I could be convinced to part with it. It owes me a decent wad of cash after importing it from Canada but I'd let it go for less than what it would cost you to buy and freight one from overseas.

I could also include one of the spring blocks from this thread :
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/mercedes-benz-performance-paddock/229944-lsd-upgrade-16v-w124.html
to enhance the performance of the diff.

Hi bahaimus,

I am tossing up between a Skyline RB33 LSD which are currently available here. I have also had a member on another forum offer to import one & I'm just awaiting confirmation of freight charges.

Do you have any info ie: history/mileage/condition of the one you have? How much are we talking & what would freight be from Brissie? I gotta factor this in compared with freighting direct from OS

Cheers,
Tim.
