Question The SL55 AMG, faster than the Murcielago, 550 and Vanquish to 300 km/h? Fishy!

We have had a discussion on bmwm5.com on it. What is your impression? We came to the conclusion that the SL55 AMG provided at the test MUST have had more than the claimed power.

Here is our discussion:

http://www.bmwm5.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12116&perpage=31&pagenumber=1

Please join if you behave

The results are surprising:

0-100 km/h:
Aston Martin Vanquish 5.6 s
Ferrari 550 Maranello 4.7 s
Lamborghini Murciélago 3.6 s
Mercedes SL55 AMG 4.6 s
Porsche GT2 4.0 s

0-200 km/h:
Aston Martin Vanquish 17.4 s
Ferrari 550 Maranello 14.6 s
Lamborghini Murciélago 11.4 s
Mercedes SL55 AMG 13.7 s
Porsche GT2 13.1 s

0-300 km/h:
Aston Martin Vanquish 55.0 s
Ferrari 550 Maranello 61.2 s
Lamborghini Murciélago 34.2 s
Mercedes SL55 AMG 32.5 s
Porsche GT2 40.9 s

Top speed:
Aston Martin Vanquish 316 km/h
Ferrari 550 Maranello 306 km/h
Lamborghini Murciélago 330 km/h
Mercedes SL55 AMG 325 km/h

Maybe.... but again, I think C32 AMG matches 996TT in 0-120mph(it's in one of the magazines... I think it's 0-120, but not really sure)..... is that fishy as well?? A car going faster from 0-100 or 0-200 doesn't necessary means it will be faster going 0-300.....

Thnx for the invitation... but my experience with BMWM5.Com is just as good as StreetKiaz.Com(No offense Gustav...nothing personal.... you are a great mod/webmaster over at BMWM5.Com..... but from all the flames I have taken from some M5 owner for expressing my opinion... a simple one, too.....I would pass)

M5 owners are welcome to join us....

Look at the drag coefficents. That would be part of it. Also look at the top speeds; it would be interesting to know how each of the cars are geared.

Too easy!

At low speeds, acceleration is primarily a function of power and weight. That's why the high-horse power Lambo is fastest to 100 km/h.

But, at high speed, drag is the limiting factor. The Lambo is a brick compared to the SL55.

The SL55 is one hulluva performance car. Too bad BMW owners have to resort to slamming the car. BMW makes no competitor for the SL. Why get mad about a Mercedes kicking performance ass?

BTW, did anyone notice the MB has 700 Nm of torque? WOW! If I owned that car, either the rear brakes would be toast from ASR engagement, or the rear tires would be to the cord every week. Yowza...

LOL.... try say that again on M5 board, bro.... and make sure you put on your flame suit.... some ppl would start blasting you with "MB has nothing but auto"..... "MBs are not performance oriented"........ "BMWs are drivers' car because M cars have nothing but manual"......blah blah blah.....

Don't think I never tried.....

Just take a look at this thread and you will understand...

http://www.bmwm5.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?threadid=3675

take a look at the guy named "Kelvin"....

"I don't need non-E39 M5 owners telling me that it's okay for BMW to make duplicates of the M5 in terms of body style on the 528i Sport. You guys are not even the ones affected by this!"

Still, don't bash BMWM5.Com... it's a very informative board, and I highly recommend those who are interested in M5 and/or in the market for one to take a look...... Gustav, Greg, MEthusiasts and many others on BMWM5.Com boards are very un-bias and their threads are always a joy to read.....

BMW owners have FLAMETHROWERS...

Such hostility!!

I love BMW cars. The M5 is super! I had a chance to drive one hard, and was very impressed with the car.

The MB vs. BMW feud is longstanding, though. Guess until BMW tops 500hp with something, MB rules the autobahn.

BTW, I heard a rumour that the new E55 might get the 476hp engine from the SL55. Drool...

Check the prices!

Buy the SL55 instead and save enough for a fleet of "regular" cars...

I think blackmercedes is right on the mark in crediting the M-B's aerodynamics.

I always had a great crush on the Lambo Espada after seeing one at the local dealer in my high school days. That beastie looked so sleek, only belt high, and had the legendary V12 engine...

Recently I read the car's specs and realized that it topped out at 150 mph! I know of a certain V8 4-door sedan from M-B that beats that number, even with a speed limiter.

In matters of speed, science wins out over art

He was banned soon after that long debating... then re-registered again as CarbonBlkM5 or something like that.....

But anyways, I rather ignore those bad memories than beating the dead horse again.....

I went through M5 board again last night..... it's pretty cool.... very calm members when discussing SL55 and other cars.... Guess I should start posting again over there....

P.S. If you feel offended in any way, I apologize..... it's just that the bad memory has hunted me for a while......

Hmm just turned this up in a search and thought I'd add to it.. Recently AMG 'realised the SL55 actually has 491 bhp (+/- 5 can't remember exact figure)'. This applies to all of them, not only the test cars, so its true the car does have more power than quoted but they're not playing funny business with test cars engines.

later!

I'd pick the Lambo too. Then I'd sell it, buy the SL55, pay off my house, and take a decade or two off with the remaining money. Here in Canada there is about $225,000 in price difference between the two...

I love this line "The sl55 can not posts some of those performance #'s. It's simply not possible." off the Website. The 55 posts those numbers because of the awesome supercharger sitting in the V and the state of the art intercooler setup. If I had an sl55, I would first drive it for 50,000 miles, use up all of the warranty and then upgrade the pulley for 550hp. The next M5, will probably be such a crap of a motor that it would break down trying to keep up with the 5.4 engine. v10, what are they thinking. Just wait until MB releases their V12 biturbo with 500hp, m5 owners out there.
