asd diff in 2.65 or 2.85
i am still looking for a sutible diff for a sawp into my car and have been informed that the 140 was available with an asd diff (the one with the clutch pack lsd) in longer ratios than the 3.07 i have in mine.
can any one confirm this and if poss give some part numbers, as i have contact with a breaker who may be able to source me one, but needs part numbers (or chassis numbers of a suitably equipped car |

The 140 uses the larger housing then what you currently have. This should help ! http://www.w124performance.com/docs/mb/other/differentials.pdf |
I really doubt u can find the asd in such a tall ratio. At least not on gasoline mods Maybe the USA diesel w124 had those. Still check GSXR's (Dave) site in his sig cause he has a PDF there listing all poss diffs

If you have the 129 case in your car just install the quaife. It handles from the high 2.7- to 3.07. PM me and I can discuss the details.

Jay The link I posted is the pdf ! Ed |
Oh so sorry. I had just waken up and I didn't even notice the link. My bad ED.

i was under the impression that the 210mm asd diff (wich i 'thought' i have in mine) was alsom used in the 140?
where is the best place on the diff i have to look for part numbers, so i can confirm wich diff it is? ( i am sure it is the 210mm one i have in the car. i used a halfshaft of a very late 124 with the 3.2 104 engine as a replacement on one occasion when i broke one, and the pdf indicates that the late 104 engined 124 is 210, it doesnt list a 210mm asd diff though in any car, which is also confusing me.) |
as for the quaife, it would be good, but i am not in a position to spend that sort of cash at the moment, where as a diff from a braker should be in my price range.

i dont really want to swap to the asr diff because i will have to start messing with the abs and blocking up the pipe from the power steering,:( i just want a longer diff ratio.

what sort of difference will swapping from 3.07 to 2.75 make
quick bit of simplified maths says if the car (hypothetically) will do 140 mph at 6000 rpm in top gear (1:1) 3.07 - 2.75 = 0.32, 3.07/ .32 = 9.5 ish so difference will be 1/9 extra? so (140 /9) *10 = 155mph not a grate deal of difference. 2.65 would be 3.07-2.65= 0.42, 3.07/0.42= 7.3 1/7 extra? 140 / 7 = 20 20*8 = 160mph is this really all the difference such a big diff change will make? |

Depends what you want to achieve... The higher ratio ( lower numerically ) will give more top end, engine will turn slower whereas the lower ratio ( higher numerically ) will offer better acceleration and keep the engine in the power band at lower road speed. For me with the TT I would keep the stock 3.07 or change out to the 3.27. Ed |
i am not happy with the 3.07. with the getrag manual box and the high output of my engine, the gearing is just too short. it would be perfect for the car to have gearing that would allow it to hit 60 mph in first.
at present, first gear is useless, it lasts around three second, also the current gearing makes cruizin at highway speed annoying, as the engine is turnin too fast and burnin cash for no reason. i recon a 2.65 will be a major improvement, it should lengthen first slightly, and make it more usable, the acceleration will improve i think, because at the moment i have to change from first to second almost as soon as i pull off. because the box is close ratio, a longer diff will just shift everything up slightly, so mid range performance will stay the same, just necessitating different change points. i am just surprised at the small difference it will make to the theoretical top speed. just wish merc made an overdrive box with some balls. the ls6 box i was contemplating using is just too heavy, is the wrong shape, and would be too difficult and expensive to modify to fit. the car will also be more relaxed on the highway. i reckon the overall performance will be better all round, the car has the power to pull much longer gears, this was how the lotus carlton was so fast, in that the gear box had two overdrives. |
power band is not an issue, as you will be aware ed, the small t2's we have have no lag atall, if i didnt have a rstupidly loud blow off valve:D i would not even know my engin was boosted:cool:

asd seems to be on more diesels than petrol, so is there a 140 diesel with a 2.65 anybody?

Forgot that you have the 5 speed !!! If your Getrag has the same ratios as the 190E then with a 2.65 rear at 6200RPM: 1- 41MPH 2- 67MPH 3- 95MPH 4- 133MPH 5- 167MPH Top speed is theoretical If you are able to find the 2.24 rear like the Hammer used you could get up to about 49MPH in first at 6200RPM.
