C124 REPLICA AMG WIDEBODY BUILD
After eighteen+ months, prepaint assembly about complete.
The build was accurately patterned from the only known NOS AMG C124 widebody kit. All steel except the aero kit... http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...IDEBODY218.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...IDEBODY216.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...IDEBODY217.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...IDEBODY215.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...IDEBODY219.jpg |
Looks excellent Ed! Going back to the Red, right? Did you do anything to the cladding? It looks more flush to the body in the pics. That could be the primer distorting depth.

All Signal Red with satin black moldings and grille insert... Cladding other then contour is about the same... Ed |
Wow, nice job, Ed. You have to bring that down to some of our GTGs in VA and MD. I'd love to see it first-hand and talk to you about it.

Wow, looks awesome.
Are you going with the updated hood? |
That looks amazing!! I don't remember which thread, but the welding work on those fenders was impressive, very well done!

No widebody C124's were made in the face lift version. (Unless if by AMG Japan which made stuff that was made no where else !!) Only deviation is addition of heat extraction louvers in the hood... http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...IDEBODY185.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...IDEBODY184.jpg |
I can't wait to see it when its done. It's going to be schweet
|
why did you keep it all steel?

Bonding fiberglass, carbon fiber etc eventually will crack at the bonding point due to dissimilar expansion/contraction rates of the two material. |

Louvers inexpensive panels from EBAY...same seller as below except angled instead of straight: Panels were installed upside down and backwards... http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...EBODY151-1.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...EBODY152-1.jpg Hood sheetmetal is thin and easily distorts under the heat of the welding. You'll need to reinforce the underside of the hood with sheetmetal strips to maintain the stock hood contour... Good bit of labor involved getting the contours correct. Ed A. |
Why did you decide to put them in upside down and backwards? That area of the hood should be a low pressure area so it will be pushing hot air out

Didn't want a typical louver like on a rod... If you look at the installation, the deep part is below the hood line facing forward allowing hot engine bay air to be extracted. The fin or blade portion is angled up and toward the rear. Similar to what Porsche, BMW uses... |
That work is amazing Ed. Done yourself proud! Cannot wait til the end product.........

I've done a little metal beating and I love it, it's actually cheaper to do, once you have the five figures of equipment to do it and the money to develop the skills in how to use it! |

Do you have any more pictures of the car? I assume it's finished and painted at this point? I am envious of your build, you are very talented. I was reading some of your posts on the other thread about turbo oil pumps. It's obvious you know your stuff. If you have a web site you post up your builds I would like to read up on your stuff. Thanks for taking the time.

You have to be a member to see pics on that site.
Love this car every time I see it. Also get jealous every time I read your sig! Pretty much my ideal garage. I've asked you this before, but always forget your answer, are you in the 113 group? The Pagoda event in Ohio is this fall, didn't know if you'll be coming to Ohio for it. |

Hoping to get back and make a whole lot of time for my passion this year!! I believe you are talking about Joe Alexander's get together in Blacklick ? Would enjoy driving out.. Need to get back on the 113 forum ! Ed A. |
I'm not all that active on the W113 forum but Joe is a good friend of mine and we go on some drives with the local Ohio guys.
Yeah I am talking about Joes event in Blacklick. It's in September this year, I think they are stretching it out so people can still go to Gemutlikeit and StarTech. If you end up going it would be cool to link up and talk at the event. I'd be curious to bend your ear on turbocharging M103s. |

Ed - any ideas on what car this came from?

I also saw the listing.. Never knew there was a complete front wing/fender as the original early kit were just the sheet metal wheel arch / flare. The front as pictured appear to be fiberglass? and the vents look a bit SL-ish... Not sure if the pic shows delamination or rust damage !!!! So many one off parts were made not only by AMG Germany but by there franchised global dealers... Nothing surprise me anymore !! Ed A. |
