16V dyno
Hey everyone,
I have been posting over on the 190 Revolution and benzport forums for a while and just started looking in here and found lots of 16V owners and lots of mb techs with lots of experience... so I can't wait to get some good discussions going with you guys. I just got my 16V dynoed and it was a little lower than what I expected. Let me update my mods: 17" EVO II wheels Bilstein Heavy Duty shocks K&N air filter removed rear SLS and have block off cover on engine new catalytic converter(had to replace because old one wouldn't pass CA emmisions) mild sport camshafts MOMO leather shift knob & boot tinted windows Nakamichi CD deck MB Quart speakers What do you guys think of the hp and torque? I know there are driveline losses, but I thought my mods would have brought up the power a little more. Is there anything that I should have checked on my car? Any ideas to get some more performance besides adding an exhaust or big bore throttle body and not as drastic as a stroker engine from bekkers. I want to stay N/A also, no turbo for me. By the way, I'm a third year Mechanical Engineering student at UCSD, hoping to get into automotive engineering. Any suggestions on how to get into the field? Thanks for all your advice and help, Giancarlo

Let me try and attach the dyno chart again.

Looks like you have a very good STOCK engine. Engine HP at 165 minus 20% would be around 130-135!
The HP & Torque figures are normal for Stock cams.

Welcome to Mercedesshop. I like th mechanics of this board better than the others and there are some GREAT people here. (I was BSME UCB) You can see my before dyno graph on my "Kompressor" page. The first thing to do is to remove the R-16 resistor to advance your ignition. You will be amazed at the difference. Search for "R-16" to find the other postings.

Hi Jim,
thanks for the input on the R-16 resistor, I never would have known about that. I just read up on your supercharger conversion... that is awesome. Nice job and creativity on your part. What did you end up doing with your BSME? just curious. Thanks Giancarlo

II also ended up with a MBA, 22 years in the Navy (rember Vietnam). I am now a Unix computer guy. It has been a strange path but a fun carrier. An engineering degree is very useful for a "car guy".

Guys,
I find it surprising that the 16V motor`s (on both Jim`s dyno run and this one) peak horsepower is at approximately 5500 rpm. I thought the four valve head would push the peak power numbers in the 6000 rpm range. Interesting. |

Both of those dyno runs were with the R-16 resistor. Advancing the ignition raised my power curve but I just have not put it on a dyno since then. I have used an Excel Spreedsheat to estimate power and it is up significantly. I will get it dynoed again in a month or so and post the results.

The stock U.S. exhaust sysytem simply can flow enough at high rpm's. My stock16v seems to be asthmatic too. A free flowing exhaust system is the answer. I'm in the process of trying to find a shop to remove my pre-cats. If I can't find one, I'll need to get a euro downpipe. If I have to get the euro pipe then I'll just need to decide on whether to get one with or without the main cat.....

Meek,
take out your resonator, it'll shave weight and improve sound and power. I replaced my 16v's with a straight piece. I gotta try to advance the timing thought. From what Chris Hunter is saying it's a considerable improvement on these cars! |
