Where can I get my horsepower tested?
Im really interested in knowing how much horsepower my car has right now, but I have no idea where I can get such a test. Any suggestions? Also, any estimates on about how much it costs? Thanks

You need to find a dyno shop. They'll run your car on a chassis dyno - basically run it on rollers. By measuring the rate at which your car can accelerate the rollers, the HP & torque available at the drive wheels is calculated.
Dynojet makes the most commonly used equipment. Point your web browser to http://www.dynojet.com Select automotive dynomometers, then the "support channel" pull down menu. You'll find a locator for the nearest shop(s) there. You'll have to call for price, but two quick runs and a printout graph run $50-$75 in my experience. |
A dyno is best ..... but an Excel spreadsheet program will give you a good approximation. Its real value is to evaluate changes that you make to your engine. By keeping everything the same (full tank of gas, same navigator etc), you can accurately determine the benifit of any changes that you make. This is a link to the 190SL site where I posted the program. You can change it for different RPM ranges.
Program Page I hope that this helps |

We have a dyno shop near us but never found the need to check the horsepower.
Do let us know how your test went ... :) |
