400E

Here in Florida we have 93 octanes gas, is posible to do the same thing to a 400e?. If so, where the resistor is located?

Someone wondered about the horsepower increase by removing the resistor. Brianw quoted the CD manual as saying "Slight deterioration in fuel consumption and engine performance occurs when the ignition timing is retarded." Then when reading the Mosselman Turbo site (http://www.mosselmanturbo.com/index2.htm), they claim that the stock horsepower is 188hp for the 12V 300e (I assume referring to the M103). Now Mosselman is a Holland company, meaning that they are referring to the European 103. 2phast states that "As with all vehicles, manufactures build in a certain amount of safety to ensure the vehicles don't self destruct. European MB that use the exact same engine, have 0 to 2 degrees of retard on the iginition. Now remember its the same motor, just different octane of gas. There is no 87 octane gas, so MB does not have to take that into consideration when they tune the vehicle for that market." Are the American and European engines only differentiated by a retard resistor? If so, and the above statements by forum members are accurate, I wonder if the 188hp reference by Mosselman for the European M103 and the 177hp of the US M103 represents the gain in hp due to the absence of the retard -- 11hp.

A wild hunch, but any takers? Comments from forum members across the pond?

V8 W124 location?

Has anyone found this resistor in a 400E yet? It's not in the same location as the 300E. Brian W, have you looked for it?

Once I locate it, I'll run some comparisons on the G-Tech to see what the yield is with and without the resistor.

czwbkx,

I have located it on the 400E and it is on the drivers side against the outside of the engine bay where it meets the front fender about half way between the headlight and windshield. It is a small round "fuse" looking thing that simply plugs into a socket with a single prong. The car is in storage right now as we are having a snow storm, but tomorrow I can get you the numbers from the top of the resistor. It sits between two "plugs" and above several others, all located on one "bank" of these type of "plugs".

I did remove mine for a short drive and there was no notable difference, but must also say it has a JET chip which might address the timing issue. I have emailed JET asking this question, but have no reply yet.

Let me know and I'll post the numbers from the top of the resistor for you to locate...it is quite easy. Also, is your 124 chipped? I'd be interested to see if a non-chipped car sees an improvement.

Let us know what you find!

johnp,

Stand on drivers side of open engine bay. Identify brake fluid reservoir. Look to left and down from the surface of the engine about 6 inches. Resistor is zip tied to the top of a black hose to right of base of air cleaner assembly. Mine was relatively dust free so the white numbers on the resistor made it easy to pick out.

czwbkx,

I've attached a picture showing the location of the R16/2 resistor for the M119.

Let me know if you still need the numbers.

If i could get the zip tie off i could. but i can't reatch the tie either. how can i get my hands / cut the tie lose? how did you guys get it out thx.

On my 300E, the zip was the perfect tightness -- enough to hold it in place for the past 16 years, but loose enough to tug out. You're right, getting to it took a little thought. There is a plug closer to the top of the engine (1/4 inch tall and an inch wide) that you can unplug allowing you to reach your hand in next to the brake fluid reservoir, but you still can't touch the resistor. I had a larger than average pair of needlenose pliers that was curved on the end. I could grasp the resistor by a hole on the far end and pull the resistor away from me. I also persuaded it from the end closer to me by simultaneously poking at it with a long flathead screwdriver. When I got it out from the zip tie, I tugged a little on the resistor and found the line had some slack, so I could bring it almost all the way up to the engine bay surface. I removed the electrical tape, took off the resistor, and put tape back over the female end.

Not sure what happened to my picture, but the numbers on the top of the R16/2 resistor for the 92 400E are as follows:

Under a small Mercedes emblem is the part number

015 545 67 28-tried looking it up here, but it is not available

Under that number is a large number 2

These are all printed in bright green on mine

Hope this helps.

Brian,

Thanks for the info. I'll try the search again armed with your description. Like you, we've also had a snowstorm (I'm in "ChicagoLand"), so the comparative G-tech runs will have to wait.

In answer to your question, my 400E is bone-stock; not even a K&N. Everything in or on my car has a Mercedes part number on it. So the G-tech runs should be informative.

I'll let you know once I've located the resistor.

Thanks,

Ray
