Larry,

I thought I'd identified all the sensors on the M103 block, as well as the wires to and from the EZL ignition box. Where's the knock sensor?

I think the knock sensor is physically located somewhere on the left side of the block. All KE Jetronic and Motronic systems have them.

Have a great day,

Actually, yes.

When cold-starting the engine i have noticed a distinct knocking for like 2-3 seconds. Then it dissapears.

Are you saying that my knock sensor eliminates my modyfied timing?
I'm running on octane 95 btw.

hello

I tried removing the resistor for a few weeks now on a 86 16v
It seems to me that i lost some power in the 4- 5000 rpm,
range??? I got no knocking or pinging with 89 oct in it.
Im going to put it back soon and see if i feel a diffence?
Thanks
Dave

More likely that's chain rattle or lash adjusters that haven't pumped up.

You pretty much have to have the engine under load to get knock. Floor it in third gear at low rpm while going uphill to test for knock.

Freestyler,

What I'm saying is that IF knock is sensed the system will retard the timing just enough to eliminate the spark knock. Because this is automatic, you don't know for sure at any given time if knock is being sensed and timing retarded.

If you have maximum octane in the tank, and the resistor removed, I doubt that it is ever getting into the situation.

sixto is correct, spark knock, or preignition will only occur under a load with ignition advanced too far for the fuel quality being consumed.

Good luck,

I noticed that my idle is up to 900 from about 750 before I removed the resistor. This makes sense because on a non computer car if you advance the timing the idle speed will increase. Has anyone else noticed this?

Have a great day,

Nope..

Where my idle would jump up and down between approx. 450 and 550 before, it is now rock steady 500 rpm.

Larry - I've got an '89 300E so I'm not sure if the timing is computer controlled or not, but my idle speed is the same as before I removed the resistor - a steady 600 RPM at operating temp.

for those who are still looking - location for W124 V8s

Just found mine the other night (400e). Drivers side just before the firewall. There is a juncture that has several wires (ignition related I think) that plug into a harness that is on the fender well. The resistor is in the center of this jucture of wires. I will post a pic when I dig up my digital camera.

Feels more resposive but I don't know how much of that is in my head. Hope to get a few more MPGs - we'll see.

91 octane, no knock.

Hey shouldn't I "cover up" the hole where the resistor was? Any suggestions?

20th/21st century auto insurance is any good?

Back a few years ago I had seveal friends who were with 20th Century. Yes there rates were good but they were total NAZIs when it came to filing claims! Two of my friends were canceled after filing claims. Others had their premiums imidiately jacked up. I've been with State Farm for since 1982. I've had my fair share of accidents both my fault and not - they've always been good with paying/rectifying the situation at hand.

Was '82 THAT long ago!? Actually when I think of the choices in cars back then it does! Anyhow I've attached a jpeg of where the resistor is. My engine seems to idle a bit more roughly than before. You are so lucky to have so many GREAT automobiles available for such reasonable prices.
