In what ways is Euro-Spec 500 E/E 500 different from US-Spec E 500?!?!?

i read on a reply to a post somewhere on this forum, that the Euro 500E/E 500 starts if 1st gear, and that is has higher reving shifts, that the US E 500's. Is this true?!?!

What else is different between Euro and US spec 500E/E 500's?!?!

BTW, you may be thinking....if i own a E 500 shouldnt i know whether or not my car(Euro Spec) starts in 1st gear?!?!

well...i dont have my E 500 yet, ive been waiting and waiting, and im so anxious!, but it should be here in one week!!so i guess im trying to find out as much as i can on what im getting....ive done alot of research, and know alot about the E 500, but this 1st gear start-OEM, and higher reving shifts on Euro models is something new to me....

***one more quick question i hope you can help me with...Is it true that the E 500's came with SL 600 brakes?!?!

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!!

Peter

Peter,

Mid-93 all 500Es got the larger SL600 binders, front and rear.

As to the 1st gear start, it's there if you want it by simply notching the shifter down to "B" and either leaving it there or switching back up to "D". I've found my quickest launches (per G-tech) were when I took off in "D"; by getting the car in motion in 2nd gear then dropping quickly into 1st (which the car does as a matter of course), I think it decreases ASR intervention. If you start in 1st gear, ASR will engage EVERY time, or if you have ASR defeat then your back tires will boil off the rims!!

Michael-

thank you very much for you help/information.

it is much appreciated!

i found out for myself yesterday, as you said, the Euro E 500 did indeed come with SL 600(129) brakes on all four corners, i checked it on the EPC at the dealership.

what is your best 0-60 and 1/4 mile at what speed, with the GTECH?
i have heard alot of different things about that GTECH, some say its very accurate, some say its all BS? but i have read up on the concept behind it, and i makes perfect sense to me. I believe it is accurate within probably 2 or 3 tenths of a second. What are your thoughts on this item?

my E 500 arrives this week!!!! Confirmed via email!
i am sooo excited!!!! to finally get/experience this car! i have never actually seen a 500E/E 500 in 'person' before, so this will be very special for me! not to mention, this is my very first car!

my mother has a 1995 S 500(140), same M119 engine, and its all around performance is of course very impressive, but i imagine this E 500 will be quite a different drive!?

well sorry for the long post, alot to say, thanks again.

Peter

Peter,

My best 0-60 was 5.1, per g-tech (and I did several back-to-back runs that were comparable), and 1/4 mile was 13.38 (Gtech).

At the track, the best I've managed is 13.8 @ 102.1 MPH

I'm inclined to think the Gtech is pretty accurate, given how close back-to-back run times have been, for me anyway

I've done maybe 20 runs that have been sub 5.3; the key is keeping out of ASR. I do my runs thus: In "D", I power-brake to about 1,500 RPM, then when I release the brake I don't release it all the way, thereby tripping the rear brake light switch...this often tricks ASR

I'm very pleased with the performance of my car...I only wish it weighed a little less

Peter-

An E500 will be your first car? I don't know how long you've been driving, but even experienced guys can get into BIG trouble with one of these cars. Easy speed, indeed...considerably moreso than an S500.

Go to a driving school...you and your new car will both be better off

I wish you the best with your new ride Drive Safe.

Peter,

I second Michael's sentiments. We've gotten into several chats at Benzsport and I sense your geniune excitement and interest.

You can get yourself in trouble with all the power and rear wheel drive. Drive carefully because the limousine ride of the Mercedes is deceptive of the actual speed. The 500E is a powerful "toy" and you have to remember that when you are having FUN (which you will!).

I want to see you do all those mods you have been asking about especially the supercharger and bodykit. :p

Happy SAFE driving.

oh man!!!
i am so pissed!!!!!!!

Michael and blue devil-
i just sat here and wrote like a 300 word reply to you two guys last posts here.......and then my computer froze!!!! ****!!! i have to type that all over again...oh well, life goes on, let me give it another try!:

yes, this is my first car. i hope you wont hold it against me, and think im some stupid kid, but i am 17. the driving age in my country(cayman islands) is 17 also, so ive only been driving for a couple months now. there isnt really a real driving school here, like the ones in the states that teach you how do drive in 'race cars' and what not. I make several trips to miami each year, and i think on the next one, im going to go to one of those schools in florida...that would be very cool!

anyways, there is this 'instructor'(whom i went to) here that teaches you the basics...so i guess i learned a few things from that. But, i do read alot of technical books, books about driving that 'teach' you about driving dynamics(apexes, oversteer and understeer corrections etc.)

although i know alot about driving, and i am a cool, calm, collected, tentative and aware driver, your(michael and blue) thoughts have been well noted, and dont worry, i am going to take my time with this car, and learn how to handle my car.

blue devil(if you dont mind, what is your first name?)-
i too want to see all of the mods i have been asking about!

i must say though, i body kit and supercharger(which im really not sure about-too many risks involved with forced induction...but who knows?!) are the last things on my long list. when i do the body kit, i am going to have the car re-sprayed$$$$ so that will be kinda the final step. ive got SO MANY!! other things planned....start out with the usual stuff, wheels, suspension, maybe some brake mods, then the renntech stuff-Intake, ASR-defeat,first gear start. Also, im thinking about changing the entire exhaust system (besides headers/exhaust manifold)

well this one isnt as long as the first one that i lost, but its still pretty long, sorry about that! just had alot to say!

so im gone,

and michael and blue, thanks for your best wishes in regards to my 'new' car!

peter.

...do you have Euro spec octane/ gas to run your Euro spec E500?

if not, you may wish to do some research on feeding the correct petrol requirements and/or mod'ding accordingly
