'85 190E Mosselman

Hi guys,

Lately I've been reading a lot in the Performance section over here. Thought I'd register myself to the forum... which turns out wasn't really necessary: already registered in 2006 and I forgot i had the account lol.

A bit of background info on myself & my passion for cars: Live in the great automotive-loving country of Belgium. Studied Automotive Technology, and since 3 years work at a Porsche dealership as diagnostics technician.
I do love the flat beetles, but my heart always layed with only one brand: Benz.

My dad used to have a Mercedes tuning shop in the 70's-80's-90's, and was local dealer of AMG up to '93. He also did Brabus, Interstate, etc. Willy Mosselman was a friend of him and so he also sold and built the turbokits on various cars (not only Benz).
So from the moment I was born my parents pretty much brainwashed me into Mercedes, Mercedes-tuning, turbokits, etc.

My first car was a 190E 1.8. Then came a '91 300TD (which I drove on waste veggie oil most of the time), than a little mistake called BMW 525TDS, and now back to real cars. A '91 300TE and a 190E 2.3 AMG with Mosselman kit. I also have a Mosselman biturbo kit for the 300TE laying around, but the turbo's need refurbishing and I'm having a hard time find someone who can do this @ reasonable cost.

Anywho, back to the subject of this thread: the 190E. Started out in 1985 as a basic 190E 2.0 4-speed, when the owner let my dad put some AMG parts on it (bodykit, suspension, wheels).
My dad bought the car around '95. But since then the car mostly stood still. In 2009 I started working on the car to bring it back to life.
Put a 2.3 engine in it with a Mosselman Turbo kit, and a 5 speed manual.

After some (a lot of) issues of bad starting, rough running, bad timing, bad injection, etc, I finally got the car running ok.

Right now i run around 0.45 bar (+-7 psi?) of boost, which is what Mosselman prescribes. However I've read a lot of posts here of guys that run up to 1 bar of boost with stock CR... If I turn my boost up, the engine starts detonating serverly above 0.55 bar, unless I heavily (!) retard the timing (with the result that the car pulls like crap in low revs and low boost).

I must admit I'm still running stock ignition system (1985, so not even EZL-kat with Resistors).
Is there any way I can run more boost withouth screwing up the timing for lower load & RPM?

Thanks!

Before I went to fully programmable fuel and ignition I was using an MSD timing retard box with the EZL. The MSD "Boost Timing Master" is pretty universal and will work with the early ign systems. You can set it to retard 1, 2 or 3 degrees per PSI of boost while being able to keep your stock timing when off boost.

Thanks for the reply Duxthe.

I've looked into MSD and that is indeed the sort of thing I need. However, it seems that their 'Universal Boost Retard Master' is not available anymore. There is still a 'Boost Timing Master', but this one only works with an MSD ignition system.

Are there any other manufacturers of boost timing retardation systems?

Since a thread is worthless without pics...

Car in '86: prepped by my dad:

My dad bought the car in '95, but put the car away for a while.

15 years later...

First time daylight in 15 years:

Polishing the Penta's, improv-style:

300E brake upgrade:

Did a rebuild on the original 2.0 engine:

After putting the fresh head back on, engine still didn't make oil pressure. Turned out the bearings were all gone... Out with the engine and new bearings in.

After some more TLC:

Next to the old 300TD:

After driving a bit with the 2.0litre I got bored with it and started searching for a turbo kit. Eventually I stumbled upon a 2.3 engine with turbokit, not more than 20 miles from where I live... Bought it for peanuts, including 5-speed gearbox, drive shaft and exhaust.

Previous owner just had the turbo rebuilt for more $$$ than what I payed him for the hole package.

Put in a new clutch

New centercaps

In good company

Had a full custom exhaust made, with a 2.3-16 rear silencer:

Put in a lambda-sensor and AFR-meter

New front wishbones

New rear arms

New injectors

Also put in new KE-head, complete new fuel system (incl. tank, pump-pack, lines, etc.), and new ignition.

And again in good company:

Also rebuild the top of the turbo engine:

Thanks guys!

Car looks better on photo than it is IRL though... It has quite some rust on the rear wheelarches, and the complete car is covered with tiny rustspots on & under the paintwork.
To be perfect it needs a complete respray, but I don't know if I'm gonna put that much money in the car (cosmetically).

Also in that dusty old garage are a '88 BMW 525i Racing Dynamics with custom interior, a '89 300E from which I pulled the Mosselman biturbokit (to put on my 300TE), and a '84 190E 2.3-16 with EVOI/AMG bodykit, 2.6 Oettinger stroker kit, and Mosselman turbokit.
All cars are build by my dad in the '80s and 90's.

Yes. Oettinger kit. I believe other crankshaft, conrods and pistons (although don't know if the pistons are part of the Oettinger kit).

Very sexy car man. Have you considered water meth injection. Serves a dual purpose of cooling and fueling. You could use a pressure sensor to activate the water meth after 0.5 bar. Just think, you could up the boost to 1bar and up the timing. Hehe

Is your car the one that was featured in August 17, 1987 Autoweek ?

In early 2007, I trucked my 300CE from the East Coast to Brian in Chicago for the install of my circa 1991 TurboTechnics twin turbo kit.

Brian is "the man' when it comes to M103 and M104 turbo installs.

M102 turbo

I have been working near 10 years in turbocharging the 2,3 8v and 16v, I am more into performance rater then if mosselman or x makes the turbo or supercharging kit. If I had a Mercedes with a Mosslman probably I will keep it and improve it (efi-intercooler) just to keep runing 7psi not more. For me it's a little hard to inderstand how these kits improve the performance since don't have a clue how does manages the fuel enrichment, when I made it with K- jettronic, kE and motronic I end up making too many custom parts and for just runing 7 psi did not make sense anymore, that's why I used Megasquirt 3X ending up with much many features and advanced tuning and performance, I have a lots of respect for the people who designed the Amg's-mosselman etc etc. I would really like to know the list of the kit made by mosselman, I have some pictures of one brand new that was for sale but its had parts too basic and don thing it's the complete one. You have some really cool cars guys, keep them like that.
