W123 280E performance exhaust options...

Hi all,

I'm planning to have a replacement exhaust made for my 1982 280E.
I'm still planning to turbo/supercharge it in the future, so I'm going to replace the centre and rear sections, my plan is to remove the middles boxes, and have a single silencer at the rear.
I'm keeping the original down pipes for now, until I decide wether it's getting a turbo or not.

Has anyone here done anything similar?
What are your experiences with it?

Cheers Frank.

on my w123 which originally had 3 boxes , 2 years ago i removed the middle one and replace the rear one with some performance mufflers! it was loud and make blab blab ! sound at idle and i didn't feel any performance difference , now i run stock rear and middle boxes with the first one removed , car sound stock at idle and have deep sound when rev felt a little performance difference (maybe because the removed box was old and blocked)

What engine are you running?

My plans are for either a single silencer, or maybe a 2 silencer system

As said be careful on a straight six exhaust. It sounds so terrible without some good mufflers and resonators. Also as said unless there is some blockage in the stock stuff I doubt you are going to see any gains in power until you put a blower on it. Then it will make a huge difference.

the first resonator is important for power making at medium revs

So, the best option would be, after the Y piece to have a resonator, delete the middle box, and fit a free flowing back box.

i don't see how a resonator is important of power
i think best performance is run bigger diameter pipe maybe (3in) and to lower the noise use silencers

I'm not too bothered about noise, so long as its under 98db, as that is limit at most trackdays that I go to.

It's never going to be a daily driver, I only use it a few times a year on the road, usually just to test things out that I've done to it.

If it doesn't need the resonator, then it won't have it, but if it does it'll be there.

on na engines and especially L6 ones you need back pressure to make torque. large pipes will make power if u have the head flow and revs to make use of them.

but then again i can be wrong,

On my 280e I found the stock dual 40mm exhaust to be too restrictive. I did a dual 50mm exhaust from front to back. No cat, an x pipe in place of the cat. One resonator and one free flow muffler at the rear. Without the supercharger, it was very slightly slower off the line. But after 2500rpm it really went crazy. The x pipe is a bit noisy but worth it. Now that the supercharger is on, its not restrictive at all. I can't imagine how restrictive the stock exhaust would have been. A restrictive exhaust can limit boost very badly coz of exhaust gas reversion.

I'm planning to keep the original down pipes, then go into a Y pipe, into a single 60mm pipe, which is a fraction bigger than the original pipes added together, and just have a single rear silencer.

If you supercharge it later you going to have to change the exhaust again. You would save money if you did a dual 50mm. Adjust your timing to make up for lost lower end torque. Then revert the timing once you supercharge it.

I've had the first part of my new exhaust system built, it's twin 50mm pipes, with a single, straight through back box(muffler).
It sound's great, and loud, it read 94db on the SPL meter, so it is still under the 98db sound limit for most UK track days.

I'll post a video soon, it sounds pretty good...
