Yes it is safe to do. It increases flow but I don't know how noticeable the performance is. How did your friends car sound after he removed the resonator?

Chris: Check out the "modifications" page on my website for pics of the resonator from my E500 removed and replaced with stainless Y-pipe from Timevalve. A little better breathing (with K&N filters) and a lot better sound!

Had tailpipe muffler off

In the 300E -- the old one simply fell off -- at the time.

BOY what awesome sound over 3000 RPM. Like a stockcar (andc about as loud)!

Awesome increases in power and pull. Perhaps is worth putting in a y-pipe to open it out at preformance times.

Wonderful though - clear off a full second on the performance!

is it illegal to run without a muffler in the US? Just wondering, I don't think its possible for my puny 3 litre to sound anywhere near as intimidating as my friends ws6 firebird with flows... now that thing is a BEAST!! (And its pretty ugly to boot)

the DOT laws limit the sound level at a certain distance from the car. so, if the sound level was low enough from a particular engine without a muffler then there wouldn't be any legal issues and the car would be licencable. the problem is, you can be ticketed based upon the subjective opinion and assesment of the police as to what is "too loud". if the cop likes mustangs and thinks the sound of a 78' mustang is nice but doesn't like snooty european cars and the sound of their engine then he can write you a ticket.

you probably don't want to run open exhaust really. it will kill your hearing and you'll get annoyed with it really fast. i had to drive my 16v for over a week with an open exhaust while i waited for my muffler to ship. it was insanely loud. it was the raspiest sound i've ever hear. it was just too loud.
