Maybe you have a strong 300
Look at the cars section at the top of the website, and there is a wright up on many mercedes modles. Or look at this link for the 300E.

I can personally testify to "back to back" testing on a 95 E420 with some minor help (225/50/16 tires on lightweight 16x7.5 wheels) vs a 95 C36. Plain and simple the C will beat it senseless up and down the street till you get to non legal highway speeds. Gearing is a big part as you are shifting out of 1st in the C36 at a hair over 40mph, out of 2nd at about 65mph, and out of 3rd at 110mph. Compared to the E420's infamously tall gearing (hell, it can hit the speed limiter at 130 in two different gears!!!) it has too much of a handicap to begin with. It also weighs in a bit chunkier by 200 or so lbs. There is a huge gap at around town speeds that only starts to dwindle when you get to/near triple digits. Don't think it ever goes away completely though. BTW, the C36 will take the Acura "S" without too much effort. The E420/400E's run 0-60 in the high 6's to low 7's with 1/4 times around 15 secs flat (give or take for mods/driver/etc) The C36's will do 0-60 in the mid to high 5's and 1/4 in low to mid 14's. 400E vs Acura TL-S is a pretty fair run in 0-60 and 1/4 mile runs. Should be a non issue from close to triple digits on up.

beat them all the time

I take them with my sportscar all the time. Shifting at redline takes them all the time... even if I short-shift its OK too, so long as you keep it in VTEC.

My dealer gave me a TL-S loaner awhile back. I like how it holds you against the rev limiter in 2nd gear, with no automatic upshifts. Does a nice job of chirping the tires off the line though.

As far as beating one with my 300CE... I don't think so.

I beat an acura tl-s once. But I was in my 00 S500 with 5 passengers including myself. I was easily pulling on him and left him behind. My 97 e420 ate any regular TL from stop light. TL-S should be a fair match for your 400E. Just an opinion.

I beat a TL-S on a hill climb. We had a rolling start off of a traffic light. Once the 400 got to the higher revs it just moved away from the TL. I was about 6 car length ahead at my turn at the top of the hill. Reading the numbers above I’m not exactly sure why unless the shift points handicapped the TL.

I think it's true that the higher-mileage and older your MB, the faster it goes!! (Unless poorly maintained). So with 210K Kms, you should be ok..

Seriously though, do you not think many old MBs go like stink even with high mileage, often much quicker than you'd ever expect? I often think to myself that my 2.0 190E goes waaaaay better than it has any right to, it takes new VW Golf GTis (non-turbo 1.8-20v 125bhp version), and I bet the figures suggest exactly the opposite.

Anyone else confirm old vs. new MB delimmas? Again, I surprised myself by pulling on a newish A190 being driven away from the local dealership by some crazy dealer at speed.. it lists a 16.7 1/4m and 0-60 in 8.2..., quicker even than figures for a 190E 2.6!

Hmm.. what gives?

Anyway, go ahead and take that Jap-Crap, be sure to practice your brake-starting (but be nice), stick driving, and be sure to use the full rev range. Close windows and turn all anicillaries off, even close the airvents and select 'recirc'.

In fact, it's definitely worth taking the spare wheel out at home, but don't tell!

Sorry for digging up such an old topic, yes today I did it, at highway speed, I found that Acura CL type-S was a joke.

Haven't done this for many years, but this morning the sun was so good after a long winter, just after I got on the highway, I saw this 2000 black CL type-S zooomed by, I live in a small city, so I guessed it might be that guy's car, it's about 10AM in the morning, there was usually not much highway traffic after the rush hours, so I caught up and kept about 6 cars space behind it, at the beginning, he was driving 20kmph faster than normal traffic but nicely, this also was my normal speed, so I followed him nicely.

Passed through downtown section, and road cleared up, as expected suddenly he speeded up, having known his driving style, I immediately kicked down and kept about the same distance, now the speed was up, for several times he got slowed down by extra slow traffic in the passing lane(pretty normal in the lazy town I live), he then passed them from the left with brutal acceleration, but it was nothing compared to the strength of 400E at highway speed, I actually could reduce the space between easily when he was at full accelerating at insane speed, didn't want to be too intimidating, sometimes I had to lift throttle from kicking down to avoid tailgating him, too bad that he couldn't enjoy the fun that car disappearing from his rear mirror and I just didn't want to pass it at insane speed to play offensive..

I hope that guy didn't know I had 250k kms on my 400E, my baby shines on highway, 2nd gear at 1XXkmph!

I drove a TL - S recently at the dealers. What a joke. 260 HP, but front wheel drive eats some of that up. No torque to speak of. I went home in myh 500E a happy man!

TL-S are not that fast. I took one up to about 45-50 holding even in my 300SE and that car is NOT fast. Above that it got a bit harder

this is just to answer the question on the post....sorry this story is not a MB....but it is funny.

last summer just finished up my buddies sisters cavalier....i know i know - but she likes it.

built a non cooled home made turbo set up for it....after first tests, the first real road test we found a type - s....off the line he had us about 3 cars, then at about 500 feet we passed him and at teh 1/4 he was toast. (we went back to the street and took basic measurements off the points from the race)

we then did the same thing to one of those nissan sentra type r....i know its a stupid cavalier, but like i said it is my buddies sisters car.

Jake

My 400E will run a 14.8 206,000 miles- Custom Intake, Y-Pipe, Muffler, Stock diff and all weather tires. Ive run my friends brothers 01 Cl-s and whooped his ass. Depending on the driver, I would say a mildly modified 400e could beat one. I would run one anyday. A RSX-s is even easier to beat. Stay away from the new TL though 270 hp, 5.3 0-60, and a 14 flat 1/4 mile. Dont mess with those.

Subman--
great site, I looked at everything you had on it. I liked the M/T and R&T articles you had. Your car is sweet. I would really like to upgrade my 95 E320 wag so it handles better, and maybe a little more power. I have the Euro edition with the stock 2.65 rear end. I was told that modifiying the 3.2 m104 I-6 engine is expensive, and to basically "live" with the 217hp / 229 torque ratings. Any ideas? How practical would it be to drop the 4.2 V8 in the wagon?
The neighbor just bought an S80 t6 Volvo with 268hp / 290 lb/ft torque. (You see the need...!)

The RSX S-type is an easy one...1996 Volvo 960 Wagon (3.73 rear end) 24 Valve DOHC I-6 10.73:1 compression has toasted several. And the Benz is only faster...
