MB 300CE 12v Turbo

Hello

No new projects lately so i decided to do it myself.
Its 88' c124 with 3.0 12v engine and manual transmision. I have owned it about 6years and resently got it running again.

Done list:
MS2 v3
K27 turbo
Elbe engineering fuel rail
Elbe engineering 36-1 triggerwheel and vr sensor
Elbe engineering exhaust manifold
Simens deka 630cc injectors
BMW m50b25 throttle body (easier to install throttle sensor and throttle pedal wire fits also with small mods)
Audi WG
Vems wideband and egt. Also boost, oil temp and pressure gauges.
3" exhaust
3" intake piping
600x300x76 cooler
Bosch 3x2 coil
BMW m20 ignition wires

To do:
Some little finishing touches(crankcase ventilation, isolate wiring etc) and clutch (i have 3 plate clutch ready but havent got time to install it), after that i think its going to be gearbox and so on

Nice car, I've always lusted after the 124 coupes..... ended up with a wagon instead. No regrets.

Questions questions.... What kind of boost you gonna run on it? Pump gas? Whatcha doing for an I/C, cant see anything in the pics. Are you running MS2 Extra and controlling the ignition? I'd be interested to compare maps once you get it tuned. I'm always fine tuning my .MSQ and it would be nice to see another similar 103's tune.

First target would be 0.5bar, right now having some problems with that, can't get boost under control. WG was brought used and i'm starting to think that spring is changed to stronger one, there are marks that it has been opened.
Good news is that it comes out from vacum about 2600rpm
Gas - yes, it's running on pump gas, plan is to tune it with 95 and when its done, change to 98.
Picture from the build - Cooler
Ignition coil is under old air filter cover and yes, MS extra firmware.

When i get desent tune then it would be definitely interesting to compare maps.

It will be neat to compare the maps and see the differences in the turbos. I run a really small turbo on my setup. It spools hard and fast but runs out of steam pretty quick. With a good load on it I've seen it cross over from vacuum into boost around 1600 RPM and make 19 PSI before 3000 RPM. I've been toying with the idea of a slightly larger turbo so I'm definitely curious how yours performs.

Reccommend me colder spark plugs, boost is now 1.0bar(cant get that lower) and ignition is still pretty conservative. Right now i'm still running with stock plugs.

Changed the plugs one step colder ones than stock. Now it has NGK BP7EFS, runs much smoother and that "hole" in about 4500rpm is gone also. Win.
Now car is in garage and waiting spring.
To do: New clutch(i have one but maybe going to swap gearbox for bmw 3.0d like Joreto, friend is doing that and could get knowhow from him).
Have to do something with interior, right now it has blue leather but would like to change it for "chessboard" cloth.
With engine it looks fine and next year will just try to increase power, looks like it's holding on fine.

Everything has been fine till yesterday when diff broke. Gearbox and clutch holding on fine. Still haven't installed any boost controller but i'm pretty happy as it is. 1st gear 0.6, 2nd 0.9 and 3rd and 4th 1.2. Later i can post some logs too.

Its quite bad right now, diff broke again, chain guides just fell off and fouled up oil pickup. Result, turbo is now good for holding hats.
First i thought it was hydraulic lifters, because engine started to making noise only when oil was hot. But when i removed camshaft cover, checked lifters, all were ok and looking nice and then i noticed that chain was really loose. Ok its chain tensioner, no biggie.
Next:

Then i checked turbo, compressor blades were hitting the hosing.
Now the chain, tensioner and guides are new, allso changed all crankshaft bearings.

Now looking for new turbo, friend had one laying around, but i think its too big.

But seriously, hx40 super with 12cm2 turbine or
Precision PT6267 t4 divided 0.84a/r or something else?

Transmision side, now we are installing GS5-39DZ from bmw 3.0d and new rear diff will gonna be bmw typ210+custom axels.

Looks like this is becoming a common swap for turboed MBs. I've already installed the gearbox and have been using it for some time, now the car is in the garage for a BMW diff swap. It's a pity that Mercedes don't have as many available LSD diffs as BMW (and at the cheap price of BMW diffs). I've come to the conclusion that BMWs are a more favorable brand when it comes to tuning.

Yes, its pretty sad that mb does not have good manual transmissions and lsd diff options(w124 210mm diff have only tree different ratios as far i know 2.65, 2.82, 3.06, and then u have to find one with lsd). If u want manual gearbox then it thats the easiest way to get transmission reliable and bmw parts are cheap here.

About turbo, i started to think that i'll buy one from Roman. Haven't decided if tb60-3 or tb70-3.

Just run an automatic in it and the 210 diff is plenty strong. If you really want you can put a 215mm diff in. I have one mocked up on my bench. But you will break the axles and driveshaft before you break the diff.

I've had no problems in over four years with the stock auto trans and the stock 3.07 open differential..

The manual transmission will always put a shock load on the drive train when launched too hard.

Key to a reliable build is to start with an engine and drivetrain that is up to factory spec.

Factory spec doesn't cut it above a certain power level especially if you are with a manual transmission and do frequent hard launches like I do.....with that said I've been using the stock diff during all these years and with all setups but it's finally started to give up as are the axles, so for me it's the right time to beef them up .
