Front speakers for 400E

Does anyone know where I can get replacement speakers for a '93 400E? (Mercedes OEM or otherwise.) I just bought this car, and they are both blown. They appear to be a weird size. Is the capacitor critical? Thanks - Mike

Crutchfield can't help you (2 ohm system, which they don't sell parts for)...so, try various recyclers (ie Potomac) for used parts, or go the dealer route. What about PartsShop here??

I've heard from another 500e owner that Mark Levinson speakers are a ++++ upgrade vs. our OEM Bose speakers and are plug and play too

Can anyone verify this? How much dinero$$$?

OEM Bose in an E500? Didn't know they did that.

Aftermarket speakers are compatable with the '94 and newer non-Bose sytems only...Bose most often runs separate amps outboard at the speakers

Just a side note pertaining to Michael's comment. The factory stereo in the E420 (and I assume the 400E) is 4ohm not two 2 (like I know the 500e/E500 to be).

Mike400E should be fine souricng speakers from Crutchfield, unless the 400E's soundsystem changed in from 2 to 4 ohm in '94...

Regards,
- Ryan

Ryan/All:

My 2-ohm comments related to pre-'94 300E, 400E, 500E. When the nomenclature of these cars changed in 1994 (to E320, E420 & E500), so did their stereo systems, which became 4 ohm systems. Ryan, my 1992 500E is a 2 ohm system unquestionably, which is the exclusive reason I opted to replace the entire thing (at great time & expense)-if it were 4 ohm, I would have simply replaced all the speakers & added a sub.

FWIW, I just talked to my local MBZ dealer-NO Bose systems went into US-model 500Es or E500s.

Oh Ok, interesting Michael - thanks for the update. I'd heard in the past that the 500E/E500 had a different 'premium sound system' than the other W124's and assumed this meant is was the the 2ohm vs. 4 ohm setups.

From your comments then, sounds like audio systems was another that changed with the nomenclature/facelift of these cars. Good to know.

Regards,
- Ryan

Ryan,

My 1992 300D came optionally with an upgraded, "premium" sound system and is identical to the standard-issue 500E setup that was in my 1992 500E

My 93 300E (3.2 liter M104) also had a 2 ohm system.

I don't know if the speakers were Bose, but the amps were.

I ripped it out because the system sucks, and it doesn't work with any other head units or speakers.

FAD-

Only thing the dealer could tell me is that the systems use a Becker head unit, and in the event you need to replace a speaker you need to advise what the P/N is on the actual speaker frame.

As I recall, the speakers that came out of my 500E had no name on them, but the amplifiers were assuredly Becker units (Paul S., are you sure about the BOSE amps? BOSE did not form any sort of relationship with MBZ until '95 or later; further, BOSE bits only work with BOSE bits, so if somehow BOSE amps were in your car, the speakers would have been too)

Michael-

....did your dealer indicate the brand of speakers in '94 E500? (vs. Bose=no, answer)

I'm inclined to believe just from observing from the outside speaker setup in my '94 E320 Coupe and '94 E500 that they are probably share the same "brand"

...listening to the two systems though, the E500 appears generally superior (from a stereo non-anal non-expert type).

Yes, I'm sure that the factory amps in my '93 were bose amps from the factory.

I had the system removed and a new one installed by a shop that is a Bekker factory authorized shop and does most of the work for Mission Viejo Mercedes Benz.

I believe the insert in my owners manual speaks to this at well.

The car is at the dealer right now, and when I get the car back, I'll check.

Paul,

Please let us know-what you would seem to have is indeed unique and unprecedented, or at least no one I know in the business is aware of. Get a Part # if you can, okay?

Assuredly we don't want to be spreading inaccurate informaton
