E500 Has Its Day In The Sun - with Pics!
We caught up with our good friend Mel who was kind enough to give us an up-close look at his special E500. Enjoy the photos and Mel's point-of-view.
I am fortunate to be the owner of this 1994 W124 Mercedes-Benz E500. I bought her from another MB enthusiast, who in turn had bought it from another enthusiast. Needless to say, she has been pampered her entire life - words like "meticulous" and "open-checkbook" only begin to describe the care given. By the time I became her caretaker a few years ago, she had already been tastefully modded, mostly cosmetic with a few performance goodies. Additional mods by me include 18" AMG Mono II wheels and swapping in a Brabus steering wheel in wood/leather. But it's still largely stock, and for good reason. There is simply very little to improve upon! Born out of a close collaboration between MB and Porsche, the 500E was produced between 1990-1995 (rebadged as E500 in 1994). Each car took 18 days to build, as it was transported several times between the MB and Porsche factories, with the majority of the assembly hand built in the same factory that produced the the legendary Porsche 959. In all, just over 10,000 of these W124.036 models were built, with only about 400 making to the US in 1994. So it's not something you tend to see everyday. How does she drive? Think "butter" and "locomotive". Even in the midst of today's horsepower wars where 300 hp is commonplace (I think my minivan has almost that much), she more than holds her own. The extraordinary build quality is only matched by the smoothness and power delivery of the engine. Smooth as butter while still pulling like a locomotive until you are well into car impound territory. It's not going to overwhelm the car (unlike so many current AMG models today), but that's not really the point. It was built to be an Autobahn cruiser, getting executives from Point A to Point B very quickly and with a minimal amount of fuss. Handling wise she can still hold her own on the twisties, but where she really shines are the road trips at sustained triple digit speeds (so I have heard ). Mercedes marketed the E500E as the "Velvet Hammer", and almost 20 years later it's still so very appropriate. |

As pristine as the first time I saw this particular car back in year 2000. I know three of the four owners this E500 has had during its life and all of them have been enthusiastic connoisseurs, who have preserved this car in its current condition.
