C36 Brake Job

Previously posted in Tech Forum... Couldn't hurt to post it here as well... Thanks

I'm thinking it is time for a brake job on my C36 was wondering if anyone had through procedure for this? I don't know if I'm going to need rotors or not, and need to know the min/max tolerences, etc. Also since this will be my first brake job on a Benz any tricks, things to be careful of, etc would be great. Also is Fast lane the best place to get parts? And one last question, have seen brake caliper paint and was wondering if anyone had tried it, though I might try red!!!! Anyway... thanks in advance

We did the brakes on our C36 shortly after buying it. I didn't bother with measuring the discs. I just had them changed. I can't give you any DIY tips, but can tell you the AMG parts are more expensive than standard C-Class parts.

I would be wary of caliper paint for a couple reasons:

1. I know some people that have used it, with very poor reults, and then it looks terrible.

2. Non-stock looking stuff on the AMG cars can look really tacky.

I painted my 500E calipers with Black hi-temp paint, and it worked out fine (even lasted thru several track events). The key is preparation-I spent several hours with a dremel tool taking the caliper down to bare, clean metal before spraying.

C36

Blackmercedes is right, you shouldn't paint the calipers on an AMG car because they won't look right. Someone will think that you just put C36 and AMG badges on your car eventhough you didnt.

Mercedes has a tool that has sand paper that you affix to the pad tool, and what that allows you to do is clean the rotors. They are called cleaning pads. Unfortunately, mercedes usually won't order you a tool unless you have the number. You can find the part number in a CDROM manual. The CD manual will have your tolerences too. You can get the manual from 1-800-For-merc

With a fast car like you have, when you stop over 100mph (sometimes less, lots of fast stops or something) the rotors will get glazed and you have to clean them to make them not squek, but the problem with cleaning pads is that for the amount of time it takes to take to take the wheels off, then take the caliper off, put the cleaning pads in, do the procedure to clean the rotors, put the wheels back on, it is cheaper to just put on new rotors on if your time is more important. It takes about an hour and a half to do that start to finish. Sometimes you have to do it twice meaning you have to make more sand paper pieces to put on the cleaning pads. Im only 18, so its not like my time is worth as much as yours, so when my rotors get glazed I just clean them off.

If you take your car to the mercedes garage and they charge $70 per hour, that would be 140 to clean your rotors, you can probably get new ones for that price....but then you have to install them. Installing rotors isn't very hard at all.

I hope my information does indeed help you,

Austin

Tifosi. First of al how many miles. Is this your 1st brake job on the car period.

Don't let alot of Guys spook you.
I have painted my calipers on my 500E. They came out awesome
Like mike said Which I did to. Was Get a dremel tool. At medium to fast speeds. Get all the rough casting off the caliper.

The brand I used was company called eastwood produts. It cost like 40-50 for a can. Its specially treated aircraft expoxy high temp stuff. It works great drying time is over night. If you can leave your car without driving its best.

fronts
As far as the brake job.
Min thickness on your discs is
25.4mm/ maint limit is 26mm meaning if there at 26mm
they may or may not make it to next service.
This is what Factory deals go by.
Buy on your case. Anything above 25.4mm is still ok.
Thats it.

This will be my first brake job on it, but have no idea what PO had done. Car has 55000 miles (5000 in last year or so by me) brake pedal feels a little "squishy" to me, especially for AMG brakes so thought that a brake job couldn't hurt. Haven't had time to really look closely at the existing pads/rotors but thought I might get some numbers from you guys before I get dirty. Am assuming that at minimum it will need pads and the brakes bled. As far as the paint, I tend to be a go for the less flashy look, but was just kind of thinking about it... Still undecided???? I've used other Eastwood products and they to have been very good. Thanks for the info anything else would be greaty appreciated.

"Squishy" brake pedal? Consider stainless steel brake lines (unless AMG already put them on the C36?). See this thread:

And while you're at it you may as well....

Go ahead and change the brake fluid . MB recommends it be change every 2 yrs, more often wouldn't be a bad idea if the car gets any track time on " standard" fluid.
So lets see that's pads,Rotors, sensors, S/S Brake lines and new Fluid...Yep that ought to just about do it!
