Question Air inlet on 500E front

Does anyone know what this air inlet is for? Do USA 500E's have this or just the Euro ones?

I'm guessing it's for the transmission cooler or the oil cooler, which live behind the lower bumper shell area on either side in the Euro models. They were not included on the US cars. Alternatively, it could be a remnant of a cooling duct for the front brakes. Is there a tube behind it? If you jack up the car and open the foglamp access door in the bottom of the bumper shell, you might be able to see more.

These tubes (both sides) route to the liquid filled motor mounts, they get quite warm during spirited driving.

Yes, like Ross says...US cars got em' too. Pretty slick little set-up. I was missing one of the tubes on my drivers side one and just replaced it this weekend...seems the folks who painted the lowers broke the mount and didn't put it back in there properly and I was driving around without the benefit of it for about 5000 miles...

Whatever you were smokin'...must have been real good!!!

Hey Flabio

Your paint looks super on the air dam...is yours a low mileage babey or a nice re-paint?...even after having the lowers painted on mine...1 year later it looks as if I plowed gravel with my air dam.

Looks great...quality job from the pix. I'll look you up when I'm in Amsterdam come late summer...OK? I would like to meet you and see your ride.

Clauser

Great choice...I will be looking for the T5 wagon when we start a family. Older ones (mid-90's)seem to be better built and more reliable from what I've heard. So far the GLT Sedan has been solid and problem free up to its 95K miles...the only complaint I have is that the allen bolts that hold the spark plug cover had corroded and were a ***** to get off...don't know if that's a problem with the T5s though...its sort of a Swedish Mercedes...if I can say that. I can find nothing else to complain about. I think another 500E owner here (maybe Ross something?) has the T5...he'd be a better person to talk to on that model...in fact; I'll probably ask for his thoughts when the times comes.

Your son is lucky...my old man put me in a 69' Beetle.

Jim,

Great, I'll give you a ride in my Supra as well so you can experience a really fast car (as supposed to a fast car, the 500E).

Clauser, so far our 850R has been a pleasant union for the last 5 months. With 240hp in the 97' US model I can't complain about passing power except for the gas mileage, it seems as if I can watch the fuel gauge sweep downward threw the gauge marks in one trip.

The ride is firm and that is the way I like it, even more firm than the 500E, but not in anyway unpleasant. Overall I give it a thumbs up, as always the best advise is to go compare vehicles with (extended if possible) back to back test drives.

If I had a unlimited choice, a AMG E55T wagon would be in the drive way instead!

Good Luck and Go Mercedes!
